Leipsic earns outright BVC title, P-G places second 3

LEIPSIC &emsp;&emsp;3 ARLINGTON 0 ARLINGTON – Leipsic's state-ranked volleyball team capped an unbeaten run through the Blanchard Valley Conference with a straight-set 25-22, 25-14, 25-7 win over Arlington on Wednesday. Danaysia Danzy had 18 kills and nine digs, Morgan Apple added seven kills, six digs, three aces and two blocks, and Jazelle Perez had five kills and three blocks. Karmyn Brough led Leipsic with 28 assists along with 12 digs and five ace serves. Jaelynn Siefer (2 aces) had 16 digs for the Vikings, who went 10-0 in BVC matches and 21-1 overall. Leipsic, which earned a share of the Putnam County League title as well, is seeded second and will host Continental on Oct. 17 in its Division VII tournament opener. Gabby Schutz (3 blocks) and Summer Proud (2 aces) had eight kills each for Arlington (15-7, 6-4 BVC). Proud also had 18 digs, while Mea Alexander led the Red Devils with 25 assists. P-GILBOA &emsp;&emsp;3 L-BENTON &emsp;&emsp;2 FINDLAY – Corrin Luginbill smashed 31 kills, Nevaeha Alvarado had 13 and Laira Parkins added eight as Pandora-Gilboa outlasted Liberty-Benton 16-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-13, 25-11 to claim sole possession of second place in the final BVC volleyball standings. Peyton Diller dished up 52 assists as P-G, 16-5 overall, finished BVC play at 9-1. Liberty-Benton, which started the 2024 season riding a 65-game BVC winning streak, dropped to 14-8 overall and placed third (8-2) in the league standings. Ava Huffman had 34 digs in P-G's win, Diller had 14, Lexi Wentz nine, Luci Hovest eight and Miley Russell seven. L-B's Corra Dehart hammered 23 kills, Lindsay May had 17 and Emily Eyink had 15 kills and five blocks in the five-set marathon. Josie Todd led all setters with 53 assists and Maddy Amstutz had 35 digs. JUNIOR VARSITY: Liberty-Benton, 25-11, 25-15. VANLUE &emsp;&emsp;3 ARCADIA &emsp;&emsp;2 ARCADIA – Vanlue overcame a 2-0 deficit and notched its first BVC volleyball win of the season by rallying for a 20-25, 23-25, 25-13, 25-22, 15-8 win over Arcadia. Olivia Secord was 56-for-58 spiking with 17 kills and 35 digs as Vanlue, 8-14 overall, finished 1-10 in the BVC. Abigail Kloepfer (20-20 spiking) had 11 kills and three blocks and Candace Saltzman (4 kills) was 32-of-32 serving with eight aces and 24 digs. Adrienne Phillips was 33-for-33 setting with 12 assists, 24-of-26 serving with three aces and had 15 digs. Madison Brooks had 12 aces and Alison Brooks had nine assists and 11 digs Kate Keefe was 30-of-39 spiking with 10 kills, 24-of-25 serving with four aces and had 35 digs for Arcadia (3-18, 1-10). Ryleigh Bostic (53-60 spiking) had 14 kills, Ellie Moes nine and Jade Johnson (6 aces, 16 digs) seven. Alexis Carter had 33 digs, with Elyse Boes adding 10 and Alexis Theis nine. Freshman Ivy Smith had some staggering numbers in the five-set match, going 176-of-177 setting with 36 assists, five aces and 14 digs. JUNIOR VARSITY: Arcadia, 25-12, 25-10. VAN BUREN 3 ELMWOOD &emsp;&emsp;0 VAN BUREN – Brooklyn Wilkin had 14 kills and four ace serves and Selma Brant had 13 kills and 12 digs in Van Buren's 25-15, 25-16, 25-19 BVC volleyball win over Elmwood. Bailey Lance had 12 digs, Lily Grine had six and Paige Ryan (3 aces, 8 assist) had five. Lydia Ponn led the Black Nights (16-5, 6-4 BVC) with 19 assists. JUNIOR VARSITY: Van Buren, 26-24, 25-20. MCCOMB &emsp;&emsp;3 RIVERDALE 0 MCCOMB – Kacey Like had 13 kills and 16 digs on Wednesday in leading McComb to a 25-19, 25-19, 25-18 win over Riverdale in their final BVC match of the season. Hannah Sherick (9 digs) had six kills and Addie Krassow (3 blocks) and Morgan Kern (5 aces) had three kills and six digs each. Kelsey Jenkins had 15 digs. Claire Bryan (46-47 setting) had 13 assists and Shelby Hassan (43-43 setting) had 12 for the Panthers (13-9, 6-4 BVC). Carly Karcher led Riverdale (8-13, 4-5 BVC) with five kills and Dylann Thacker (6 total blocks), Shayla Newfer (2 blocks) and Addie Farmer (35-36 setting, 5 assists) added three kills each. NORTHERN 1 DOLA – Kenton won two close sets to close it out and cap Wednesday's 25-9, 19-25, 25-23, 25-20 volleyball win over Hardin Northern. Baylie Bacon led Hardin Northern with 13 kills and Catherine Overs had nine. Kendall Frank dished out 27 assists and Lainey Thomas led the Polar Bears (13-7) with 15 digs. GIRLS SOCCER NORTHVIEW 3 FINDLAY &emsp;&emsp;0 SYLVANIA – Sylvania Northview pumped in three goals and pitched shut out defense in chalking up a 3-0 girls soccer win over Findlay High on Wednesday. Findlay, 4-11-1 overall, wraps up the 2024 regular season Saturday at Ashland, then will have 10 days off before facing Toledo Whitmer in the Division I district tournament at Bowling Green. L-BENTON &emsp;&emsp;3 EASTWOOD 0 FINDLAY – Liberty-Benton wrapped up its regular season girls soccer schedule on Wednesday with a 3-0 win over Eastwood. L-B improved to 8-4-4 and next hosts Vermillion on Oct. 16 in a Division IV sectional soccer match. Eastwood fell to 5-8-3 with the loss. CLEAR FORK 6 RIVERDALE 0 BELLEVILLE – Clear Fork's Melodie Blubaugh scored five goals and assisted on a sixth in the Colts 6-0 girls soccer win over Riverdale. Clear Fork (11-4-2) had a 12-1 advantage in shots on goal. Ryleigh Howard made six saves for the Falcons (9-3-2). GIRLS TENNIS PORT CLINTON – Findlay's Caitlin England and Bluffton's Rory Youngpeter will be in action today at the Division I and Division II girls district tennis tournament being held in Port Clinton. England, a No. 4 seed, will face No. 1-seeded Maddie Peisley of Sylvania Northview, the Northern Lakes League champion at No. 1 singles, in her opening match. Youngpeter, also seeded fourth, will open district play against Lexington's Uloeda Ezike, also a No. 1 seed. The district finals to determine state qualifiers will be held on Saturday. CROSS COUNTRY Before local and area cross country runners take their first steps on the tournament trail that leads to state, they will be going for league and conference honors on Saturday. Several league championships are on the schedule. Findlay will be competing in the Northern Lakes League meet at Fremont, Blanchard Valley Conference runners will gather in McComb for the BVC Meet, and Columbus Grove will be in the field at the Northwest Conference Meet in Van Wert.
