Teen shot and killed

FINDLAY — A youth shot by police during a foot pursuit Monday was pronounced dead. Provided On Monday evening, three juveniles were allegedly consuming alcoholic beverages at Bernard Park, according to a press release from the Findlay police. One suspect fled on foot, initiating a foot pursuit that ended with shots being fired. The release states a firearm was discharged at an officer first, causing him to return fire. The suspect was shot and officers immediately rendered first aid. As of Monday night, the suspect was in critical but stable condition after being transferred to a Toledo area hospital. An updated release from FPD Tuesday afternoon announced the suspect's death. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation, according to the release. Police have not identified any of the three suspects, but Thang Darapheth and Vida Inthavong, who identified themselves as the victim's parents, posted on social media. A picture posted by the father had comments identifying him as "Kalvin." "Last night was a mother's worst nightmare," Inthavong wrote in a social media post. "This hurts to the core. He did not make it. I am torn as a mother." Inthavong shared details of the incident that have not yet been confirmed or denied by police, and public records requests, including any related 911 calls or bodycam footage, were not answered by the department Tuesday. The couple posted at Facebook that Kalvin was shot multiple times in the head and body. "Not once but multiple fatal shots," they wrote. The boy's parents said a blood test showed there was no trace of alcohol in his system. "He was hanging out with friends like a normal teenager," they posted. "This is an ongoing investigation and we are working closely with the Hancock County Prosecutor's Office and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations," Findlay police Chief James Mathias told The Courier. "An updated press release will be sent out soon regarding this incident and addressing some of these rumors. We are still early on in this investigation." Findlay police released another press statement about 4 p.m. Tuesday, saying the following: "We are aware of the comments, assumptions and misinformation on social media and we will be releasing information as it becomes available. We are working closely with the Hancock County Prosecutor's Office and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation on releasing redacted information in the near future regarding Axon Body Worn Camera footage." Police also stated they recovered a handgun at the scene in the 4 p.m. press release.
