Still no bodycam, no details

FINDLAY — Circumstances behind the killing of a teen during a police pursuit last month are still unclear. Findlay police Chief James Mathias said two Findlay Police Department officers are on paid critical incident leave pending an official investigation. He said an ongoing criminal investigation is the reason police haven't released any footage from the incident. "I will be letting all media outlets know the correct timing of any release of (body worn camera) footage," Mathias said in response to a public records request filed last week. "But not this week." Police responded to Bernard Park last month for a tip that juveniles were consuming alcoholic beverages. Once police arrived, a foot pursuit ensued, resulting in gunshots being fired at police. Police fired back, and killed Kalvin Darapheth, 17, of Findlay. Mathias also did not answer a series of questions or records requests, including about any recorded 911 calls, surveillance videos or information regarding how many shots were fired by either person involved. An autopsy was scheduled to be completed last week by the Lucas County Coroner's Office, but Mathias said those results would be sent to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the organization now leading the investigation. A public records request The Courier filed with the BCI has yet to be completed. Darapheth's family raised $5,324, about half of the goal, in an online fundraiser to help pay for the youth's memorial services. The fundraiser is no longer active and a funeral service for Darapheth occurred earlier this month.
