Findlay's Weihrauch shines at Beauty and the Beast

GYMNASTICS Findlay High gymnast Josey Weihrauch turned in some of her best marks of the season on Saturday when she placed second in the all-around standings in the annual Beauty and the Beast meet held at Findlay High.An alternate to last year's state meet, Weihrauch was second on the balance beam with a score of 8.850. The sophomore was fourth in the vault (8.350), uneven bars (8.400) and floor exercise (9.100) routines for an all-around total of 34.70 points.Macy Medley of Olentangy Orange won the all-around title at Saturday's meet with a 35.700 total. Weihrauch edged out another Olentangy Orange gymnast – Laney Miller (34.500) – for second.Medley and Miller led Orange to the team title with 139.5 points. Olentangy Liberty Center (132.45) edged Findlay (131.75) for second in the 11-school event. Napoleon (121.95) and Patrick Henry (115.50) rounded out the top five.Renee Metzger, also a sophomore, had a strong meet as well, placing third on beam (8.750), sixth on bars (8.050), seventh on floor (8.850) and fifth in the all-around scoring with 33.90 points.Gabrielle Doering, the lone senior on the FHS squad, was fifth (8.300) and Lily Huff was seventh (8.200) on vault. Allison Niederkohr placed eighth on floor (8.800).Findlay's gymnasts will now prepare for the Northern Lakes League meet to be held on Feb. 7, and the Northwest District competition to be held on Feb. 21. WRESTLING JOE SZYMCZAK DUALSBLOOMDALE – Elmwood placed fourth and Liberty-Benton seventh in the Joe Szymcazk Duals hosted by Elmwood.Elmwood 144-pounder Peyton Schafer led the Royals with a 5-0 record. Schafer won three of his matches by technical fall and another with a pin.Zach Schafer had three pins and two forfeit wins at 132, and Connor Sterling was 4-1 with a pair of pins at 165.Will Pask was unbeaten in five matches in leading Liberty-Benton. Pask won three matches by pin, another with a technical fall wrestling in the 132-pound division. He bumped up to 138 and added a sudden victory win in L-B's match with Otsego.Colin Bates was 5-0 with one forfeit at 175 and Maddyx Vermillion was 4-1 with three pins at 190. THUNDERBIRD INVITELIMA – Four Bluffton wrestlers were top-eight placers and the Pirates were ninth in the team standings of the Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Lima Central Catholic on Saturday.Bluffton's Brenden Cross went 3-2 and placed fourth in the 120-pound division. Ronal Kaufman, 5-2 with four pins at 106, and Evan Grothause, 4-2 at 190, placed fifth and Mason Shank (285) was seventh.Columbus Grove's Ty Meyer went 5-2 at 215 and was fifth and Boat Thompson (138) was eighth. Three Cory-Rawson wrestlers placed, with Hunter Niese (190) finishing seventh and Hayden Walters (106) and Jaiden Smith (120) eighth.McComb's Brody Gallagher was fourth in the 132 weight class, and Colton Smith was eighth at 150. SALLY GEORGE INVITEMARION – Upper Sandusky's Ethan Lewis edged Westland's David Dell 5-4 in the championship match to win the 165-pound title at the Sally George Invitational held at Marion Pleasant.Braylon Shepard was fourth at 106 and Graham Wolf was fifth at 113 for Upper, which placed 13th (57.0) in the 21-school field, just ahead of Riverdale (56.0) and Ada (50.0). Mechanicsburg (176.0) nipped Liberty Center (174.0) for the team tile.Riverdale freshman Grady Phelps at 132 and 190-pounder Kydin Reed were third in their divisions and Jackson Ambrose (138) was fifth.Ada's Landon Simon was runner-up at 215 and Silas Riblet was sixth at 120. SANDUSKY ST. MARYS DUALSSANDUSKY – Van Buren's Drew Phillips went 10-0 with seven pins in the 165-pound weight class at the Sandusky St. Marys Duals on Saturday. Carey's Kahle Tong went 7-3, also at 165, in the tournament.Carey's Kayden Burgei (144) and Jordan Hertel (150/157) posted 9-1 records in their matches, Nathan Gery (215) was 8-2, and Emery Littleton (113) and Keegan Baughman (126) were 6-4.Van Buren's Brooks Hill posted a 9-1 at 138 and won seven of his 10 matches with a pin. Tommy Basinger (175) was 7-3 and Jack Basinger (285) was 6-4. Two Hopewell-Loudon wrestlers posted 8-1 records, Isaiah Hook at 157 and Wyatt Crow at 215. HOCKEY SYLVANIA -- Findlay's hockey team had few answers Saturday against Sylvania Northview Saturday. The Wildcats -- the No. 6 team in the state -- blitzed the Trojans, shutting them out 9-0. Findlay goalkeeper Brett Flanagan started, and made 13 saves, but allowed five goals before being relieved by teammate Jude Brasfield. Brasfield also made 13 saves for Findlay, which dropped to 9-18-1. The Wildcats improved to 20-6-4. Findlay returns to the ice Thursday, when it travels to the Huntington Center in Toledo to take on Toledo St. John's.
