Findlay boys tennis upends Bobcats

FINDLAY 4B. GREEN 1BOWLING GREEN – Findlay swept the singles matches in straight sets and beat Bowling Green 4-1 on Monday in the first round of the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association statewide team tournament.Sam Swisher doubled up Bowling Green's Caleb Goff 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Luke Williams beat Jackson LaPointe 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2, and Owen Vick scored a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Eric Jiang at No. 3.At No. 1 doubles, Findlay's Owen Metz and Jonathan Wright put Findlay up 4-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over BG's Robert Seiffert and Treyvon Ladler.In a marathon match at No. 2 doubles, Bowling Green's Gavin Roessner and Keegan Kriska outlasted Findlay's Cohen Perkins and Jon Dornbush, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.Findlay will face Toledo St. Francis in the second round, but finding a compatible opening in the schedule might be difficult for the Trojans, who have eight matches – five on the road – scheduled over the next nine days. WYANDOT COUNTY SPORTS HALL OF FAME UPPER SANDUSKY – "Pete" Stinchcomb, a Sycamore native who earned all-Ohio honors playing football for Fostoria and all-American honors playing for Ohio State, heads a group with strong local and area ties that will be inducted into the Wyandot County Sports Hall of Fame during that organization's annual induction ceremonies to be held April 19 at the Masters Building located at the Wyandot County Fairgrounds.Though he lived in Sycamore, Stinchcomb took a train very day to attend Fostoria High School because that school had football and his did not. His senior year he was an all-Ohio halfback on Fostoria's unbeaten state championship team, and later played halfback and quarterback for three years at Ohio State. He was all-Western Conference all three years, and first-team all-American in 1920 when Ohio State went 7-1, it's only loss being to California in the first-ever Rose Bowl.Also being inducted into the Wyandot County Sports Hall of Fame this year will be Clare Aubrey, Danielle (Jacoby) Butram, Gary Egner, Travis Moyer and Ben Stockmaster, along with Upper Sandusky's unbeaten boys basketball state championship team from the 2004-05 season.An Upper Sandusky graduate, Aubrey scored 1,507 career points for the Rams. She also attended the University of Toledo and University of Findlay, averaging over 13 points a game her junior and seniors seasons at UF.Butram was a three-time state champion and 10-time all-Ohioan in track for Carey. She was a member of Carey's state championship relay teams in 2004 (800) and 205 (1,600), and was the Division III 400-meter winner in 2007. A track and basketball standout at Riverdale, Egner remains the school's all-time leader in scoring (1,053 points) and rebounding (744). He went on to score over 900 points in three seasons at the University of Findlay, and later served as an assistant coach with the Oilers.Moyer has achieved over 200 career wins as a football coach at both Wynford and Wapakoneta, while Stockmaster, a 1965 graduate of Mohawk High School, was Wyandot County's first native-born athlete to qualify for the state wrestling tournament.Under the direction of head coach Keith Diebler and with his sons Jake Diebler (18.4 ppg), now Ohio State's men's coach, and future Mr. Basketball Jon (24.9 ppg) spearheading a run-and-gun offense Upper Sandusky achieved a perfect 27-0 record in 2004-05.Along with Greg Micheli (15.6 ppg), who would go on to quarterback Mount Union to three NCAA Division III national football championships, and a strong supporting cast, the Rams averaged almost 90 points a game in winning district, regional and state titles for the first time in school history. HARDIN COUNTY SPORTS HALL OF FAME KENTON – Three Hardin Northern graduates will be entering the Hardin County Sports Hall of Fame when that organization holds its banquet and inductions ceremonies on June 14 at St. John's Evangelical Church in Kenton.Hardin Northern graduates slated for induction this year are Sue Fetzer (class of 1968), Charles Renner ('73) and Jeff Hastings ('84). Also being enshrined this year are Kenton grads Jim West ('64) and Daren Gilbert ('81), and former Ohio Northern University volleyball coach Gayle Lauth.
