Anthony Wayne edges Trojans in NLL opener, 3-2

AN. WAYNE 3 FINDLAY &emsp;&emsp;2 WHITEHOUSE – Findlay's young pups did not give Anthony Wayne a Northern Lakes League loss on Wednesday. But the Trojans very likely gave the Generals, predicted to be the big dog in the NLL ranks this season, some anxious moments. Reece Stillings gave up just three hits and three runs and Findlay backed the junior right-hander with solid defense. But Anthony Wayne got solid pitching as well, including some clutch seventh-inning relief from Drew Cunningham, and held off the Trojans 3-2 in an NLL Buckeye Division matchup on the Generals home field. The loss was the first in five games for a young FHS team with no seniors on the roster. Anthony Wayne, a veteran team – 10 seniors – and a unanimous pre-season pick as the NLL favorite, is 2-1. The game was the league opener for both teams. Tommy Kec had an RBI triple for Anthony Wayne, which put two runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning and scored what proved to be the winning run in the fifth. Landon Echelberry doubled and scored a run and Jacob Gebhardt had an RBI single for Findlay. The Trojans trimmed the deficit to 2-1with a run in the top of the fourth inning, and pulled within 3-2 in the seventh before that rally ended. A senior right-hander, Lammers needed just 67 pitches to compete the no-no. He struck out 12 of the 16 batters he faced. Vanlue's lone base runner reached on an error. Tommy Offenbacher with a single and two doubles and Myles Camareno with two singles and a double both drove in two runs to lead Leipsic's offense. Avery Paris (1B, 2B) had two hits and John Dewar an RBI double for the Vikings (7-3, 4-1 BCVC) who have won six of seven games. Kooper Leatherman, a freshman catcher, singled, doubled and drove in two runs.
