Grove sweeps team titles at Ada district

ADA – Columbus Grove's boys track team won just three final events on Saturday. The Bulldogs were first in just two of the girls races.Grove scored in almost every event, though, and doubled up in some in winning Division III district track championships at Ada.Grove's boys team scored 137 points and had a comfortable margin of victory over Van Buren (75). Carey (65), Riverdale (55.5) and Pandora-Gilboa (48) rounded out the top five; Arlington (46) edged McComb (45) by one point for sixth among the 18 boys teams in the field.With 133 points, Grove's girls scored almost exactly the same amount as the boys team. Coldwater (120) was a close second, and Van Buren (66) edged Riverdale (62) in the battle for fourth and fifth.Gavin Baxter was a triple winner for Grove's boys. He won the 110 hurdles (15.11), leaped 21-7 to lead Grove's 1-2 finish in the long jump (Grant Eversole went 21-6), and anchored the first place 800 relay (1:32.36) team that included Trevon Baxter, Eversole and Brody McCluer. That same foursome was second in the 400 relay (43.79) in a photo finish with Van Buren's group of Josiah Chapin, Seth Gregory, Cooper Bahn and Mikey Pendergast that ran a winning time of 43.70.Allison Thompson was second in the 100- (13.06) and 200-meter dashes (26.51) and helped Grove's girls win two relay events, the 400 (50.36) with Aubrey Schroeder, Kendal Palte and Lauryn Auchmuty, and the 800 (1:44.92) with Auchmuty, Jade Roeder and Devanie Pingle.Leipsic's Morgan Apple, an Ashland University recruit and a returning state qualifier for the Vikings, swept her specialties, winning the 100 hurdles in 15.34 and the 300s in 46.37. She also placed third in the 100 (13.17).In addition to anchoring Van Buren's winning 400 relay, Pendergast won the 400 (50.53) and teamed with Gregory, Chapin and Nick Carey on the top 1,600 relay (3:31.44).Hardin Northern's Riley Newton won the 200 (22.89), was a close second (11.59) to Carey's Tripp Phoenix (11.36) in the 100, and placed third in the 400 (51.22).Carey's Brody Baker won the 300 hurdles (40.68) and was second in the 110s (15.32).Riverdale's Kolten Evans swept the distance events, winning the 1,600 in 4:28.54 and the 3,200 in 9:52.83. Elmwood's Braxton Benner captured the district title in the 800 (2:01.76).McComb's Elijah Gibbs, who had already qualified for the regional in the discus, added a district title to his resume by winning the shot put with a heave of 52-3¾.Track athletes will now focus on regional competition. Division I (at Port Clinton) and Division III (at Fostoria) meets begin Wednesday and conclude on Friday, with the Division II meet at Lexington on Thursday and Saturday. DIVISION IIOAK HARBOR – Fostoria's Azhzenet Hatter locked up a spot in next week's regional track meet with a third-place finish in the girls 300 hurdles at the Division II district meet held at Oak Harbor on Saturday.Hatter ran a time of 46.44 in the 300 hurdles.Upper Sandusky's Shiloh Shasteen was fifth in the pole vault (9-6) at Oak Harbor. Jocelyn Leightey was sixth in the 200 (26.32) and Lia Wilkinson was sixth in the 100 (17.11).
