Carey wants to be an America 250 community

CAREY — Cassie Miller, director of the Carey Chamber of Commerce, told the Carey village council about the America 250 Ohio commission in honor of the 250-year anniversary of the U.S. at its regular meeting Monday. "I would really like Carey to become a member of the one of the America 250 communities," Miller said. "Our name will be out there as a place to come for events and we will get resources and recognition … as well as opportunities to develop professionally and personally." Miller later asked council to pass a resolution as an emergency, allowing the village of Carey to officially join the America 250 Ohio commission. Mayor Chad Kin advised council had previously discussed joining the commission and would pass legislation at a July meeting. In other news, the council discussed commercial vehicles, trailers and boats parking on residential streets. A concerned resident in attendance reported having trouble seeing past neighbors' vehicles when backing out of a driveway. Police Chief Jeff Conley reported he had been working with officers to ensure all vehicles were following village ordinances. Council also continued a discussion from a previous meeting regarding camping at Waterworks park during the 2026 Novena pilgrimage. Kin advised Our Lady of Consolation has asked the village not to allow camping due to rising maintenance and security costs at the church. Council discussed how to allow those who were responsible to camp, but not allow those who caused issues. Village administrator Mike Roszman reported the completion of the installation of an inclusive playground with a grand opening scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at Memorial Park. "We have quite the itinerary," Roszman reported, later saying food would be provided for a donation. There will also be entertainment and a raffle drawing. Roszman also reminded residents not to blow yard debris into streets and any signs stabled to utility poles would be removed by the village. Council then heard the following legislation: • The second reading of an ordinance revising and replacing tree commission ordinances in chapter 151 of village ordinances. • The second reading of an ordinance to establish a financial advisory committee. • The second reading of an ordinance to establish an audit advisory committee. • The second reading of an ordinance to establish an oversight committee. • The third reading of an ordinance approving the codification, editing and inclusion of certain ordinances as parts of various component codes of village ordinances. • The third reading of an ordinance to modify an ordinance to an exemption for ATV, UTV or golf carts on Blue Devil Parkway. The next Carey village council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 8 at the Carey Fire Station.
