FAGA golfers claim match play titles

ARLINGTON – Jake Schroeder and Kyle Hepp saved some of their best golf for last in winning age group titles at the Findlay Area Golf Association's match play tournament held Monday and Tuesday at Arlington's Sycamore Springs Golf Course. Schroeder carded a 77 in Monday's qualifying round, the third best score in his bracket. In Tuesday's match play, he advanced to the championship match with a 2&1 victory over Cole Bishop, then defeated Andrew Tomlinson 3-up for the 16-18 title. Nathan Alge would edge Bishop 1-up in extra holes for third. Hepp did not post the best qualifying score either, firing an 87 in being seeded second behind Andrew Hibbard's 86. Hepp would defeat Bentley Anderson 3&1 in the boys 14-15 semifinals, then beat Hibbard 2-up in the championship match. Noah Robb outlasted Anderson, also in extra holes, for third. Annabelle Seville followed a similar path to the girls 14-18 championship. Seville was second (85) to Addyson Adams (81) in the qualifying round, but beat Aubrey Cline 3&2 in the first round of match play, then defeated Adams 2&1 in the final. Cline topped Isla Crim 5&4 for third. Clay Bergman went wire to wire to win the boys 12-13 title, following an age group best qualifying score of 92 with 2&1 match play wins over Will Gutman in the semifinals and Ian Luo in the final. Two 1-up outcomes decided the youngest age groups. Trysta Adams scored a 1-up victory over Brianne Curry in the girls 10-13 tourney, and Sevi Adams defeated Carter McKibben, also by a 1-up margin, in the boys 10-11 final. Sluggers baseball XENIA &emsp;&emsp;16 FLAG CITY &emsp;&emsp;6 XENIA – Xenia used two bases-loaded bombs to build a big early lead and rolled to a 16-6 win over Flag City on Tuesday in a Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League game at Grady's Field in Xenia. Xenia's Will Lawrence hammered a grand slam home run during a five-run rally in the bottom of the second inning. Troy Lynch had a bases-clearing three-run double when the Scouts tacked on another seven runs in the third. Xenia led 13-3 after three innings. The Scouts added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, and got a walk off win without benefit of a hit in the seventh when two walks and two beaned batters brought in the run that made the score 16-6 and triggered the mercy rule when one team leads by 10 or more runs after the seventh inning. Lawrence drove in five runs and Lynch knocked in four with a single, double and triple. Gus Gandy had a single, two doubles and scored four times and Ayden Alsobrooks had three base hits and three runs scored. The Scouts, 9-6 and leading the GLSCL South Division, outhit Flag City 14-8 and took advantage of 11 walks. Chris Franks' lead-off double and Cameron Baker's two-run double keyed a three-run Sluggers rally in the third inning. Bret Reed had an RBI single in the fourth, and Brayden Curlis clubbed a two-run home run in the seventh. Curlis (1B, HR, 3 RBI), Reed (2-1B, RBI) and Franks (1B, 2B) all had two hits for the Sluggers (7-8), who face Xenia again today before returning home and hosting the Scouts Thursday in a GLSCL game at Fifth Third Field.
