Serving up kindness

FINDLAY — City Apparel + Merch and United Way of Hancock County came together this week to dish out delicious food and words of kindness to local veterans. City Apparel hosted The Wailing Onion food truck outside of its building on Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., as a part of its weekly Do Good Thursday's summer series. This week, diners were encouraged to write a note of gratitude to a local veteran while they waited for their food. "We often do Senior Cheer, where we have notes of encouragement and letters that we take around to nearby nursing homes," Volunteer Coordinator for United Way Mindy Ary said. "There's a huge veteran population inside the nursing homes as well so we wanted to do something a little bit special." The series is a collaborative effort by City Apparel and United Way. Hosted each Thursday through Labor Day, a rotating food truck is posted outside of City Apparel, located at 116 E. Main Cross. Rotating food trucks include Johnny Burrito, Wailing Onion and Slippin Sammie. "This is City Apparel's movement of Do Good Thursdays," CEO of United Way Kelley McClurkin said. "City Apparel has become that vehicle to make that possible and we're so grateful for the support.". A portion of the truck's proceeds benefit United Way's Halt Hunger Initiative. Over the course of two summers, the program has donated $2,600 to support food security in Hancock County. "A portion of the sales go to us and all of these trucks have gotten on board for that, which is amazing," McClurkin said.
