Carey council may update parking ordinance

CAREY — Carey Village Council discussed updating an ordinance allowing residents to park trailers and large vehicles on village streets at its regular meeting Tuesday. Councilman Tyler Bame said he was not in a hurry to inflict damage on professional truck drivers who are simply trying to make a living, but he had noticed some trailers that had been in the same spot for several weeks. "I think the timeline on the trailer sitting could be a lot tighter window," Bame told council. "I think the intent (of changing the ordinance) is when stuff is sitting with debris, building materials, garbage and then it becomes a problem for everyone else." Carey Police Chief Jeff Conley told council he would need to be informed of an updated ordinance and that enforcing an ordinance about trailers couldn't always be a first priority. "That's where those time restraints become somewhat frustrating for us," Conley said. "If we have a busy day, that may not be a priority to go check trailers." After some further discussion, council agreed a new policy would be written about allowing large vehicles and trailers in residential areas. Village solicitor Jim Gucker said he would bring an ordinance enforced in the city of Tiffin as an example of what that policy could look like to the next council meeting. In other news, Carey resident Brent Bleam asked council if LifeVac, a medical device commonly used to assist in choking emergencies, was available in Carey police cruisers. Council member and Wyandot County EMS volunteer Stephanie Wade told Bleam that while they could be useful devices, they were not currently approved for the county EMS scope of practice. "We know they exist, we know how to use them but as of right now, they are not approved for use," Wade said. Conley said if an officer responds to a medical emergency before the ambulance is able to get there, cruisers are equipped with Narcan, AED devices and officers are allowed to do basic first aid, if they have received the proper training. Mayor Chad Kin said the village would look into whether they would be able to equip village emergency vehicles with the device. Also at the meeting village administrator Mike Roszman said the village recently experienced an electrical outage that left the village without phone service or a main traffic signal. He also said the village was working on getting a landline connected for emergency calls. The village later approved the following legislation: • A resolution supporting the Ohio Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial, also known as America 250 Ohio. • The third reading of an ordinance revising and replacing tree commission ordinances set forth in Chapter 151 of the codified ordinances of the village of Carey. • The third reading of an ordinance to establish a financial advisory committee. • The third reading of an ordinance to establish an audit advisory committee. • The third reading of an ordinance to establish an oversight committee. The next Carey village council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. July 21 at the Carey Fire Department.
