Onueghbu has strong debut as Sluggers top Scouts

XENIA – Andrew Onuegbu's debut with Flag City was an impressive one as the right-hander out of Glen Oaks Community College gave up just one hit over six innings in pitching the Sluggers to a 6-1 win over Xenia in Sunday's second game of a Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League doubleheader at Gradys Field in Xenia.Onuegbu, who joined the team shortly before the club took off for Xenia, walked two batters and hit one. The Sluggers backed him with errorless defense, though, and turned two double plays. Onuegbu faced just 19 batters over his six-inning stint on the mound.Braeden Brown pitched the seventh, completing a two-hitter.Matt Gardner, Jaxon Brown and Caleb Smith had RBI singles in the second, fifth and sixth innings. Brett Reed belted a solo home run in the sixth as Flag City built a 6-0 lead.Xenia fell to 24-15 but the Scouts, who had won six of their previous eight games entering the contest, had already clinched the GLSCL South Division title with a 5-3 win over Flag City in Sunday's opener.By winning the second game, Flag City ended a three-game skid and is 18-19 overall. The Sluggers have four regular season games remaining after today's GLSCL All-Star event in Mason, a doubleheader against the Southern Ohio Copperheads Thursday at Bob Wren Field in Athens, then home games against Southern Ohio Friday and Saturday at the Marathon Diamonds.
