Sluggers pitchers shine as All-Star game ends in tie

MASON – Clutch pitching by three Flag City pitchers allowed the North to forge a 1-1 tie with the South on Tuesday in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League All-Star game played at Prasco Park in Mason,With the game tied 1-1, Leo McEnulty pitched a scoreless eighth and Aidan Murphy struck out the side in the ninth. In the tenth inning, Bryan Stenzel, a right-hander out of the University of Missouri-St. Louis, got a ground out and two strikeouts to end it.A fourth Flag City pitcher, Braxton Betancourt, started for the North All-Stars and pitched a scoreless first inning, allowing one hit and striking out two.The North All-Stars totaled nine hits in the game and Flag City players accounted for seven of them. Chris Franks had two base hits and Andrew Stechschulte, a Findlay High grad, Caleb Smith, Matt Gardner, Harrison Engskov Tanner Powell and Will Lafferty had one each.Engskov's base hit also accounted for the lone North run on the scoreboard. Following a walk to Lima Locos third baseman Grant McGuire and a wild pitch, Engskov delivered an RBI single to put the North up 1-0 in the second inning.The Sluggers have an off day today, and have four regular season games remaining, a doubleheader against the Southern Ohio Copperheads Thursday at Bob Wren Field in Athens, then home games against Southern Ohio Friday and Saturday at the Marathon Diamonds.North 010 000 000 0—1 9 1South 000 100 000 0—1 10 2 TRIPLE A BASEBALL INDIANAPOLIS – Toledo Mud Hens starting pitcher Wilkel Hernandez was cruising Tuesday against the Indianapolis Indians. Then came the fifth inning. Indianapolis put up four runs in the frame, and rolled to a 7-1 win over Toledo. With one out in the fifth, Indianapolis got three straight hits off Hernandez, including a two-run single by Nick Solak, which put the Indians up, 2-0. The Mud Hens went to reliever RJ Petit, who promptly surrendered a homer to the Indians' Billy Cook. It was Cook's fourth homer of the season, and Indianapolis went up, 4-0. Thomas Harrington started on the mound for Indianapolis, and went 5 2/3 innings for the win. The Mud Hens only run came in the sixth, when Justyn-Henry Malloy connected on a solo homer. It was his fourth home run of the season. The Indians added a run in the bottom of the sixth, and in the eighth, got a two-run double from JI Hwan Bae. The Indians improved to 57-39, while the Mud Hens fell to 51-46. Toledo will play at Indianapolis again tonight, with an 8:05 p.m. first pitch.
