Carey fifth at Elmwood Invite

GIRLS GOLF NORTH BALTIMORE – Carey's Lydia Black shot a 62 at the Elmwood Invitational at Birch Run Thursday, and Carey finished fifth at the Elmwood Invitational. Mia Kitzler registered a 66 for the Blue Devils, while Dakota McKinney fired a 68 and Amyah Conn had a 70. MEYER RESIGNS HAMLER – Patrick Henry announced Thursday that softball coach Mike Meyer – who led the program for 16 seasons – resigned earlier this week. Meyer's overall record with the Patriots was 257-116; he won three district championships, and Patrick Henry was the regional runner up twice under his leadership. MUD HENS LOSE NO-HITTER IN 9TH TOLEDO – Toledo Mud Hens pitchers Troy Watson, Tanner Rainey and Geoff Hartlieb combined to take a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the St. Paul Saints Thursday. The no-hitter didn't happen, but the Mud Hens still scored their third victory in as many days, topping the Saints 7-1. In the top of the ninth inning with Toledo up 7-0, Hartlieb came on for his second inning of work. The 31-year-old right hander had thrown a perfect eighth, maintaining a 2-0 Mud Hens advantage. The Mud Hens then scored five runs in the bottom of the inning. Hartlieb started the ninth by getting St. Paul's Payton Eeles to fly out. The Saints then sent up a pinch hitter, Luke Keaschall. Keaschall – who is with the Saints on a rehab assignment after getting injured while playing for the Minnesota Twins in April – lined a base hit to left to break up the no-hitter. Hartlieb went on to allow two more hits and a run before finishing the game for his fourth save. Watson started the game and threw the first six innings, striking out six and yielding a pair of walks. He was making just his second start for the Mud Hens after being promoted from Double A Erie. His pitching so far in Triple A has been exceptional; he's allowed two runs on five hits in 11 innings. Rainey threw a hitless seventh, working around three walks. Marco Raya started on the mound for the Saints, and pitched very well, allowing two runs on six hits in six innings. The only blemish for Raya came in the fourth, when Jace Jung slugged a two run homer to right to put the Mud Hens ahead. It was Jung's 11th homer of the season. The game remained 2-0 until the eighth, when Toledo sent 10 men to the plate against St. Paul reliever Aaron Rozek. Trei Cruz laced a 2-run single for the Mud Hens in the inning, while Akil Baddoo, Ryan Kreidler each added an RBI single. Justyn-Henry Malloy drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. The Mud Hens improved to 55-50; the Saints slipped to 46-57. Toledo and the Saints will square off again tonight at Fifth Third Field at 7:05 p.m. VAN BUREN HALL OF FAME Tickets are available for the inaugural Van Buren Athletic Hall of Fame Induction ceremony and banquet, which will be held Aug. 23.
