Kudos to Yost for backing up qualified solicitor selection

Last week, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced the appointment of the state's newest solicitor general — the person who serves as the state's lead attorney for appeals in state and federal court. He has chosen Mathura Sridharan, an Ohio native who has been deputy solicitor general since 2021. "Mathura is a relentless defender of Ohioans, a champion of federalism and legal force to be reckoned with in a courtroom," Yost said. "Her brilliant legal mind and masterful understanding of constitutional law make her the obvious choice to lead the team as Ohio's solicitor general. Based, it seems, purely on her name and appearance in a photo released with the announcement, a pathetically predictable squad of internet trolls decided to attack Sridharan, even falsely suggesting she was a "non-U.S." individual. It's true such hate and ignorance has found new freedom in recent years, as a certain brand of individual is being led by the echo chamber of social media to believe it is acceptable to give voice to the lowest version of themselves. But Yost, a Republican who earlier this summer ended his campaign to become the next governor of the Buckeye State, was having none of it. Yost posted on social media, "A few commenters have asserted incorrectly that Mathura is not American. She is a United States citizen, married to a US citizen, and the child of naturalized US citizens. "If her name or her complexion bother you, the problem is not with her or her appointment." How shameful that the hate against Sridharan was loud enough Yost felt the need to respond. But good for him.Enough is enough. Yost appears to have made a solid appointment, and Sridharan will no doubt serve Ohioans with dedication, no matter what some of them have said they think of her.
