Celina edges Trojans' tennis in season opener

FINDLAY – Celina's Larissa Jackson outlasted Findlay's Abigail Russell 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in a marathon No. 3 singles match to earn the Bulldogs a 3-2 win over the Trojans in the first girls tennis match of the 2025 season for both teams.Celina swept the singles matches, with Isabelle Thobe and Kate Guingrich, both returning all-league players from the Bulldogs 2024 Western Buckeye League championship team, defeatingKendall Beall 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 and Rosalynn Mayle 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 respectively.Findlay tied the match 2-2 with doubles victories. At No. 1, Willow Wetzel and Audrey Schroeder, two returning letter winners for the Trojans and first-year head coach Emily Hadler, beat Celina's Ladicie Dorsten and Lily Linz 6-4, 6-1.Findlay's No. 2 double team of Reese Hagedorn, another letter winner, and Maggie Bramel then teamed up for a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ashton Lehman and Kayana Wills.The Trojans are back on the courts today when they take part in the Ashland Invitational. Golf L-B INVITEARLINGTON — The team race was close and the battle for medalist honors even closer at the Liberty-Benton Invitational held Friday at Sycamore Springs Golf Club.In a BVC battle for top honors, Van Buren chalked up a 318 score to edge Liberty-Benton (323). Ottoville (327) was a close third and Kalida (329) fourth. Among the other schools in the 12-team field, Upper Sandusky was sixth (342), Bluffton seventh (349), Arlington 11th (405) and Pandora-Gilboa 12th (462).Van Buren's Jake Schroeder and Cole Bishop and Liberty-Benton's Andrew Tomlinson all fired 1-over-par scores of 73. Schroeder won medalist honors, thanks to a scorecard playoff. MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – Justyn-Henry Malloy smacked a three-run homer in the third inning, and starting pitcher Keider Montero delivered a strong six innings as the Mud Hens toppled the Bats, 7-2. Jace Jung added a two-run blast for Toledo, which won for the fifth straight time. Both of the Toledo home runs came off Hunter Greene, who is in Louisville on a rehab assignment. They were the only hits Greene -- who the Cincinnati Reds hope will play a big role in their playoff push – allowed in 5 1/3 innings. Greene struck out seven and walked three. Montero allowed five hits and an unearned run, striking out five and not walking a batter while improving to 3-4 this season. The Mud Hens moved to 61-51. Eduardo Valencia, who hit for the cycle in Thursday night's win, singled and drove in two runs Friday. Rece Hinds had an RBI single in the first inning for the Bats. Louisville added a run in the ninth after a wild pitch by the Mud Hens' Matt Seelinger. The Bats dropped to 48-64. Louisville and Toledo will play at 7:15 p.m. today and at 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
