Creek near Carey found to be contaminated

CAREY — Poverty Run Creek, located east of Carey near County Road 16 and Township Road 105, was found to have been contaminated with excess hog feces that had been used as fertilizer in a report Sunday. According to a release, the contamination was reported to Wyandot County Public Health. Shortly after, the Wyandot County Emergency Management Agency, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources were alerted and reported to the scene. By Tuesday morning, the Ohio EPA had determined the cause was an overuse of hog manure as fertilizer on nearby crop fields. In high concentrations, exposure to hog manure can cause nausea and headaches. Wyandot County EMA, Wyandot County Public Health and others are working quickly to address the situation, the release states. Those with wells near the creek may test their well water at local certified testing laboratories or at Wyandot County Public Health on Wednesday afternoons and Thursday mornings for $75.
