Owens launching nursing degree program

FINDLAY — Owens Community College has announced its first bachelor's degree program, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Completion Program. This initiative is the first bachelor's degree to be offered in Owens' 60-year history. The college began planning the program two years ago after the state recognized a growing need for more bachelor's-prepared nurses, encouraging community colleges across the state to develop bachelor's degree programs. Earlier this week, the Higher Learning Commission approved the BSN Completion Program. The college expects its first round of classes in Summer 2026. "This program reflects our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of our students and our region," President of Owens Community College Dr. Dione D. Somerville said in a release from Owens. "By offering an accessible, high-quality BSN, we're expanding educational pathways and helping to build a stronger, more resilient healthcare workforce across Northwest Ohio." Designed for working, registered nurses who earned an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or a diploma in nursing, the program allows bachelor's degree-seeking students to complete coursework online, offering a flexible approach for employed professionals. The 55-credit hour curriculum includes courses such as nursing leadership, informatics and technology, healthcare systems, patient-centered care, public health, research and a capstone experience in nursing leadership and management. Owens is expecting to initially enroll 25 students twice per year, with a projected growth to 72 students by the program's fourth year. The BSN Completion Program will be a part of the School of Nursing and Health Professions, currently offering 23 associate degrees and certificates in 11 disciplines across the Toledo and Findlay campuses.
