Grose takes over FHS boys golf

FINDLAY – Ryan Grose is the new guy in charge of the Findlay High boys golf team, but he'll have a veteran group of players to work with this fall.Grose, also Findlay High's boys basketball coach, replaces Tait Metz as FHS golf coach. The Trojans head into the 2025 season missing just three players from last year's team, but all three – Payson Dotson, Owen Metz and Sam Swisher – were key contributors for a group that won a Division I sectional title and placed fifth in the district.Dotson manned the No. 1 spot in Findlay's lineup and was a two-time first-team all-Northern Lakes League selection. Metz was the Trojans No. 2 man and second-team all-NLL; Swisher was in the No. 6 spot most matches, and carded Findlay's second-best round, an 81, in the district meet.Jamie Tate, Jacob Meier and Leo Castellaneta headline a deep senior class heading into the 2025 season.Tate held down the No. 3 spot and Meier was at No. 4 during the 2024 season. Castellaneta often rotated with Swisher at No. 5. All three have been consistent early this season, with Tate and Meier averaging around 80 strokes per match and Castellaneta around 81.Owen Vick, a junior letterman, has also been consistently around 81 strokes per round. Seniors Bryce Frost, Reece Stillings and Greyson Cramer have also taken a turn in the varsity rotation this season, along with junior Kellen Sherer.Findlay started the season well, averaging around 324 strokes per match and consistently placing among the top five teams in several multi-school tournaments. The best was a first-place finish in a Sectional Preview event held at Sycamore Springs Golf Course in Arlington where the Trojans were competing against the same schools they will see in the Division I sectional on Sept. 24.Findlay then cranked out a season-best score of 310 in the Dublin Coffman Invitational. The Trojans placed seventh in an elite field – the top four teams all shot under 300 – but it was an indication of Findlay's competitive potential against top teams on an elite course.
