Response on abortion A recent letter in The Courier claimed abortion is solely "a woman's right to choose" and "not the business of politicians or men." I believe it misses a vital truth. When I speak about abortion, it is not to impose my religion but to affirm the inherent value of human life — a value that transcends politics and personal preference. Science shows life begins at conception, meaning two lives are involved, and both deserve protection. We often hear abortion described as a private matter between a woman, her doctor, and her God. But if the unborn child is a distinct human being, society must act as guardian for those who cannot speak for themselves. Ironically, on the same page as that letter appeared a column by Cal Thomas quoting C.S. Lewis' "The Screwtape Letters." In it, a demon named Wormwood is taught to distract people from God's truth. This struck me as a fitting metaphor for how abortion debates often obscure the moral clarity that should guide us. This is not about judging anyone, but about defending the defenseless. Alternatives exist — adoption is a loving option that preserves life and offers hope. In a world quick to prioritize convenience over conscience, we must remember that true compassion protects all life — born and unborn. It is time we let truth guide over hearts and laws.
