Carey council swears in new officer

CAREY — Jocelyn Laferty was sworn in as a Carey police officer at Monday's village council meeting. According to a release from the Carey Police Department, Laferty has previously worked for the Plymouth Police Department, the Ohio Health Police Department and served in the Army National Guard. "(Laferty) has experience serving others and her training will benefit the police department and in serving the citizens of Carey," the release states. Laferty was sworn in by Mayor Chad Kin. In other news, Carey resident Terry Nordike spoke to council about a sidewalk near his residence, saying he had recently received a letter from the village about the sidewalk being broken. He also said he and his wife had fixed the area with sand, but more work may have to be done. Public Works director Neil Puchta reported the sidewalk and curb had possibly been broken while the village had been fixing a broken water main in the area. "The village should fix it if the village broke it," Kin said. Village administrator Mike Roszman said the village would pay any expenses Nordike had incurred while fixing it. Council also discussed what to do with an old fire truck. Fire Chief Chad Snyder reported a nearby fire department had been interested in purchasing the vehicle, but recently decided against it. He later advised he would be working to get it advertised and sold elsewhere. Council also voted to table a discussion about scooter and golf cart safety to a future meeting. Also at the meeting, council passed the following legislation: • Authorized the village clerk to certify to the county auditor that certain village utility charges be entered upon the tax duplicate as a lien and waving three readings. • Accepted the amounts and rates as determined by the budget commission and authorizing the necessary tax levies and certifying them to the county auditor and waiving the three readings. • An ordinance amending an ordinance setting permanent appropriations for current expenses and other expenditures of the village of Carey for fiscal year 2025 and declaring an emergency. Council then went into executive session to discuss personnel. No further action was taken. The next council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 2 at the Carey fire department.
