Findlay rolls to 11-0 win over Whitmer

FINDLAY &emsp;&emsp;11 WHITMER &emsp;&emsp;0 FINDLAY – Amping up an offense that generated just 35 goals last season was a top priority for Mike Aubry and the Findlay High girl soccer team. Wednesday's matchup with Toledo Whitmer may have lit an offensive spark for the Trojans. Olivia Gayhart and Elynn Hawkins scored three goals each, Lainie Clevenger had two and Findlay broke loose for its highest scoring game in five years in rolling to an 11-0 win over Whitmer in a Northern Lakes League Buckeye Division contest at Elmer Graham Stadium. Gayhart, a defensive standout for the Trojans, also had two assists and Hawkins had one. Ray Cap and Greta Zaciewski had a goal and an assist each. Neeti Barot scored one goal, and Cate Weissling had an assist for Trojans, whose previous best offensive outing was a 14-2 win, also over Whitmer, in September of 2020. Emme Patey led a strong defensive effort with 11 intercepts and a steal. Gayhart and Lucy Bower (2 steals) had eight intercepts each and Ava Cooper (2 blocks), Elleson Rader and Weissling all had six. The win was Findlay's first in two matches. The Trojans are at Louisville on Saturday before matching up with Perrysburg on Aug. 27 and Anthony Wayne on Sept. 3 in two key NLL games. ELIDA &emsp;&emsp;5 RIVERDALE 0 MOUNT BLANCHARD – Elida's Lexie Good pumped in three goals and the Bulldogs did all of their scoring in the second half in chalking up a 5-0 girls soccer win over Riverdale. Ryleigh Howard made 10 saves in goal in Riverdale's season opener. ADA &emsp;&emsp;5 FT. JENNINGS 1 ADA – Alex Gibson scored two goals and Kenley Poling had a goal and an assist in Ada's 5-1 girls soccer win over Fort Jennings. Shay Smith and Avary Acheson scored as well for Ada, which is off to a 3-0 start to the 2025 season. VOLLEYBALL VAN BUREN 3 CAREY 1 VAN BUREN – Brooklyn Wilkin had 23 kills, three blocks and 12 digs on Wednesday and Selma Brant had 11 kills and 22 digs in Van Buren's 25-13, 15-25, 25-15, 25-22 volleyball win over Carey. Lydia Ponn (32 assists, 6 digs) had four kills and two blocks and Morgan Walters and Maggie Gunder added three kills each for Van Buren, which is coming off a 17-7 season in 2024. Lily Grine had 20 digs for the Black Knights, and Brittyn Wilkin had eight digs, three aces and two blocks. Rylie Stoops was 20-of-27 spiking with seven kills and added 11 digs and seven assists for Carey. Abbi Seager led the Blue Devils with 12 digs, and McKinnley Kessler had 14 assists. BLUFFTON &emsp;&emsp;3 P-GILBOA &emsp;&emsp;0 BLUFFTON – Bluffton's Camryn Fruchey stocked the stat sheet with six kills, 11 assists, seven digs, five aces and four blocks in the Pirates' 25-16, 25-23, 25-17 volleyball win over Pandora-Gilboa. Kendall Stackhouse led Bluffton with 10 kills and Lainey Grandy had five. Vanessa Cross (3 aces) had 19 digs, Adelyn Althaus had 11 assists and Karlie Lora had five blocks as Bluffton (1-2) chalked up its first win of the season. Corrin Luginbill led P-G with 12 kills. Ava Huffman had 18 digs for the Rockets, and Cora Hovest had 13 assists. USV &emsp;&emsp;3 VANLUE &emsp;&emsp;0 McGUFFEY – Upper Scioto Valley edged Vanlue by two points in two of the three sets in edging the Wildcats 27-25, 25-19, 25-23 in nonleague volleyball action on Wednesday. Candace Saltzman led Vanlue with eight kills and came up with 10 digs. Aubree Higgins, Madi Brooks (5 blocks) and Ali Brooks added two kills each. Phoenix Heuerman paced Vanlue with 15 digs, and Adrienne Phillips had a team-high 13 assists. COL. GROVE 3 ARLINGTON 0 COLUMBUS GROVE – Columbus Grove held off Arlington in close first and third sets in posting a 25-21, 25-16, 25-23 volleyball win over the Red Devils. Ellie Marquart led Arlington with 11 assists and served up five aces. Mea Alexander had 18 digs and Callie Hartman a team-high six kills. JUNIOR VARSITY: Columbus Grove, 25-14, 25-13. CROSS COUNTRY ICE-BREAKER INV. UPPER SANDUSKY – Columbus Grove was second in the boys division and third in the girls race at the Ice Breaker Cross Country Meet held at Upper Sandusky's Harrison Park. Columbus Grove's Caleb Stechschulte was eighth overall with a time of 17:41.47 and Riverdale's Eli Weber was ninth (17:41.83) in the boys 5,000-meter race. Grove's Carson Closson (17:44.78), Breece Pingle (17:57.16) and Tanner Smith (18:10.05) finished 11th, 13th and 14th. Upper Sandusky was fourth in the boys division with Troy Mawer (15th, 18:10.61), Kameryn Webb (18th, 18:18.51) and Emery Pahl (23rd, 18:36.46) earning top 25 placings. Columbus Grove was third (100), Carey seventh (212) and Upper Sandusky 13th in the girls meet. Grove's Alyssa Ellerbrock placed third (19:26.71), Erin Downing was seventh (20:51.22) and Leanndra Price was 16th (21:29.69) to lead Grove's girls team. Carey's Sarah Reinhart was fifth overall (20:43.93), and Juliana Boes placed 22nd (21:59.63).
