Vanlue drops opener to Leetonia

VANLUE – Leetonia entered Thursday's season opener against Vanlue with a 30-game losing streak. The school, located about 15 miles south of Youngstown, brought a marching band and a rather impressive visiting crowd to Vanlue Thursday night. The Bears partisans were rewarded for their travels by seeing Leetonia control the contest, shutting out the Wildcats 47-0. Leetonia led 40-0 at halftime. The Bears offense had a number of big plays, including a 65-yard touchdown run by Ethan Mathia, a 22-yard TD gallop by Grayden Henderson and 26-yard touchdown rush by Devin Randolph. Randolph's touchdown was the only Leetonia score after the half, and came after Vanlue's Trey Miller forced a turnover on downs with a fourth down tackle, and after another stop by the Wildcats defense. Vanlue, which has 15 players on its roster (Leetonia has 21), hasn't won since the second week of the 2023 season, when it beat Millersport, 56-28. The Wildcats will host Crestline next Thursday. The Bulldogs will open their season tonight, at home against Buckeye Central. GIRLS GOLF ST. JOE CENTRAL CATHOLIC INVITATIONAL At Sycamore Hills FREMONT – Hopewell-Loudon bunched three players in the top 11 scores, and rolled to victory at the St. Joe Central Catholic Invitational at Sycamore Hills in Fremont. Hopewell-Loudon's Megan Boes fired an 83 to place third and Aubrey Cline put up an 87 to tie for fifth. Mallory Rowe's scored a 98 to tie for 11th. That pushed the Chieftains to a 368, 23 strokes ahead of runner-up Old Fort. Sarah Combs of the Stockaders was the runner-up with an 82, six strokes behind the individual champion, St. Joe's Ryan Dickman. St. Joe was third with a 397, 10 strokes ahead of fourth place Clyde. Calvert, which was paced by Hannah Spaun's 94, was fifth with a 408. Bluffton, whose Katie Bauman was 13th with a 100, placed ninth in the team standings with a 460.
