West Nile Virus case found in Hancock County

FINDLAY — A case of West Nile Virus has been reported in Hancock County. Hancock County Director of Environmental Health Joshua Niese reports a Hancock County resident sought medical attention for symptoms and after testing, was confirmed to have the West Nile Virus. The resident received treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. Niese said the case is concerning but "it's not necessarily something that the public needs to be on high alert at this time." The virus has been detected in Ohio every year since 2001, said Niese. Hancock County Public Health has what he calls a "robust mosquito surveillance program" that has been working to monitor mosquitos for many years. Mosquito traps have been set and samples are sent for testing on a weekly basis during the summer. "The data is then used to help adjust or tailor any plans for mosquito spraying throughout the community." But spraying is also available upon request for large gatherings like Flag City Balloonfest or the Hancock County Fair. West Nile Virus is most often spread through infected mosquitos. According to an informational webpage from the Centers for Disease Control, mosquitos can become infected from biting an infected bird but the virus cannot be passed from human to human. Niese maintains that prevention is still the best protection. According to a release about the case, most people infected by the virus don't develop symptoms, but those with a weakened immune system may develop a fever, headache, body ache, nausea, vomiting, swollen lymph nodes, diarrhea or rash. To prevent mosquito bites, wear light-colored longsleeve shirts and pants, eliminate or treat areas of standing water including flower pots, gutters, pool covers, bird baths, buckets and tires, and use EPA-registered repellents. Mosquito dunks to treat standing water near residences are available for free at Hancock County Public Health.
