Heacock, Cavinee key Red Devils against Bulldogs

ARLINGTON – Arlington scored on its opening possession in Friday's 34-14 win over Ada.Senior quarterback Trenton Heacock connected with senior back Ayden Cavinee on a 13-yard throw on the right side for the Red Devils' first points. That was a sign of things to come. Heacock and Cavinee were everywhere for Arlington, controlling the game on both sides of the field. As the two main cogs in the Red Devils' offense, Heacock and Cavinee are deadly both on the ground and through the air. On defense, the defensive backs were able to slow any momentum the Bulldogs tried to build. "Those guys are our leaders and they made plays, both offensively and defensively," Arlington coach Nick Inbody said. "They rose to the occasion and really made plays when we needed them to."Heacock completed only 10 of his 19 throws for 96 yards, but five of his passes went for touchdowns. In addition to his opening-drive connection with Cavinee, he also fired TD passes to 6-foot-10 tight end Calvin Willow (16 yards), two to sophomore Dawson Weihrauch (5, 10 yards) and a second one to Cav inee (23 yards) in the fourth quarter.Heacock also rushed for 81 yards, while Cavinee rumbled for 157 rushing yards on 17 carries, adding three receptions for 44 yards and two receiving touchdowns. It seemed like no matter which way Heacock got him the ball, Cavinee found a way to make a big play for the Red Devils."It was senior night, and I thought our seniors really came to play," Inbody said. "Ayden makes plays, Trenton makes plays, Calvin (Willow) made plays for us tonight."Try as it might, Ada was unable to string together any momentum-shifting moments in Friday's loss. Going against a powerful Arlington team that had outscored opponents 76-0 through the first two games, the Bulldogs had their work cut out for them. "They're a balanced football team with a lot of talent all over the place," Bulldogs coach Toby Smith said.There were plays, however, where it looked like Ada might swing things in its favor. The Bulldogs finally found the endzone with a minute left in the first half, as a 75-yard drive was capped off by a 3-yard quarterback keeper by junior Blake Zoladz up the middle.The touchdown was the first points Arlington had given up all season.Just four minutes into the third quarter, Heacock found Weihrauch for a 5-yard toss up the right side for a Red Devil score. Less than four minutes later, Weihrauch and the Red Devils found the endzone once more, as it took just nine plays for Heacock to connect with Weihrauch for a 10-yard score. Ada's second touchdown came with just a minute remaining in the game, as Zoladz once again found a hole from 9 yards out for a quarterback score. Zoladz finished with 100 passing yards, completing 9 of his 19 throws, and 21 rushing yards on 11 carries and two scores. Senior receiver Gavin Oldfield had six catches for 56 yards. Senior Kayleb Hickman posted 19 rushing yards and 15 receiving yards."We tried to keep making them line up, and I think for the most part we did that," Smith said. "As a good senior-laden team does, they take advantage of field position, they take advantage of turnovers, they take advantage of everything that happens throughout a game. Every time we had a chance to get off the field, we needed to make a play and they made one instead of us. Tip your hat to them."The Red Devils improved to 3-0 ahead of a home meeting with Van Buren on Friday.
