'Plant the future' event coming to Findlay

FINDLAY — Transforming landscapes — and communities — through the power of native plants and prairie restoration is the theme of a free community event to be held Monday. The Blanchard River Watershed Partnership and the Toledo Zoo's Wild Toledo Prairie Program will present "Plant the Future," at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the Lindamood Room of the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library, 206 Broadway St. Prairies and native plants can transform the local landscape, improve the environment and save communities money, said Jane McCleary, president of the Blanchard River Watershed Partnership Board of Directors. McCleary said the presentation will highlight the ecological and economic benefits of restoring the native prairies that once dominated the landscape of northwest Ohio. These natural systems support pollinators and wildlife, absorb floodwaters, improve air quality, and reduce storm water runoff and pollution. Prairie root systems, which can reach depths of up to ten feet, help stabilize soil and filter water more effectively than traditional turf grass. "Prairies are more than wildflowers, they are resilient landscapes that support pollinators, save communities money and restore Ohio's natural heritage," McCleary said. In addition to the environmental advantages, presenters will discuss how native landscaping can lead to significant cost savings for communities. Prairies require minimal mowing and maintenance, reducing labor, fuel and equipment expenses. Across Ohio, municipalities are finding that native plantings not only cut costs but also enhance the visual appeal and identity of public spaces, McCleary said. For Hancock County, the implications are especially promising. Flood mitigation properties that currently demand expensive upkeep could be transformed into thriving prairie landscapes—functional, beautiful and sustainable, she said. Attendees will also get a firsthand look at a new urban prairie located just outside the library, offering a living example of how native habitats can be reintegrated into urban settings. "This is a chance to learn, be inspired and help shape a healthier future for Findlay and Hancock County," she said.
