Another perspective on fair board As a former member of the Hancock County Fair Board and current manager of the Grange Building on the fairgrounds, I am saddened by claims that the fair board's management is reckless and that children have been put in second place. Any improvement to the fairgrounds benefits 4-H members as well as all exhibitors at the Fair. Withholding funds from the fair board is simply another way of taking resources away from the kids. The fair board has already implemented changes to ensure earlier issues are addressed and to correct irregularities from prior management. The Ag membership voted on Labor Day, the closing day of the 2025 Fair. Membership voiced their desire for change — exactly what the commissioners were asking for. It is time to move forward with new leadership. A state audit is being completed, and the CPA firm is working through past irregularities. The decision to build the Old Mill Stream Centre was a wise one. It is used for many purposes, it paid itself off in a short time, and remains in high demand with consistent bookings. Much of the income from the OMSC goes to improve the fairgrounds. Examples include a new concrete floor in the Buckeye Building, upgraded electrical systems, ceiling fans for comfort, and improvements to the Merchant's Building and Grange Building. Camping upgrades and the added WiFi to the entire fairgrounds also make the fairgrounds desirable for events. Construction of a new Junior Fair Office has given kids a dedicated place to meet, prepare for completions, and simply enjoy being kids. Additional parks and gathering spaces have been added for fairgoers' enjoyment. With the addition of the new multipurpose building even more events can be booked year-round, making full use of the fairgrounds. The new building will also benefit livestock, exhibitors, and visitors. At this time, what is most needed is a commitment to working together as a board. Airing disagreements publicly does not fix the problem. The focus must remain on cooperation and doing the best for the fairgrounds and the youth who depend on it. Deborah Brumley Findlay
