Hanneman, Baker agree -- again -- on all of this week's games

Everybody can use a break now and then.Even our pugnacious Pigksin Prognosticators.Sports editor Zach Baker and Dave Hanneman have been strutting around the newsroom this past week, chests all puffed out and noses in the air. After some really hit-and-miss picks over the first three weeks, our fearless forecasters were mired in mediocrity, barely hitting on 70-to-75 percent of their predictions. And this from two guys who are supposed to know their stuff when it comes to area football.Then came Week 4. There were just 13 games on the schedule, our monkey-see, monkey do prognosticators agreed on all 13 games and both went 12-1, stunningly good records for them both.Week 4 was not what you'd call a tasking chore, though. In eight of those 13 games, the winning margin was over 30 points. Heck a blind goat in a carnival shooting range could have predicted those outcomes.Week 5 was expected to offer a new challenge, though.We're back up to 15 games on the schedule and a quick glance gives us the impression that seven or eight of those games can go either way.Imagine our shock and surprise, then, when the gridiron gurus turned in their picks this week and – surprise – once again agreed on every single game.We're guessing they're going to miss on some – or several – of those toss-up games. But the difference in the overall scores – Hanneman owns a five-game lead – will remain unchanged … at least for now. Hanneman's PicksLast week: 12-1; overall 47-13Findlay over FREMONT ROSS – Don Paul Stadium will be rocking on Friday for the 103rd meeting between these long-time rivalsMcCOMB over Ada – Ada has a bit more big-play potential; McComb will be protecting its home turf for the first time all season. Could go either way.LEIPSIC over Arcadia – Vikings don't win big. But you gotta give them credit, the thing they've done so far is win.ARLINGTON over Pandora-Gilboa – Fourth straight home game for Arlington. I don't know if that's a big deal or not, but it's about the only nugget I could find that might tip the scales one way or another.Liberty-Benton over ELMWOOD – The numbers do not lie. L-B has outscored the opposition 179-12; Elmwood has been outscored 169-59.Van Buren over RIVERDALE – In a comparison of common opponents, Knights have a slight edge.SENECA EAST over Carey – Seneca East won one game 2-0 and another 14-2. In the course of a season, how many times is one team's final score "2"? Enough rambling. This one could be a good 'ol slobberknocker between these two rivals.Upper Sandusky over WYNFORD – Both teams are 1-3. Upper's losses have been fairly close. Wynford's losses, especially the last two, have not.Bluffton over SPENCERVILLE – Pirates win fifth straight heading into next week's showdown with LCC. Both teams will likely be 5-0 entering that game.Columbus Grove over DELPHOS JEFFERSON – Bulldogs got their first win last week and it was impressive. Expect the same against Jefferson.ELGIN over Cory-Rawson – Elgin probably still riding the emotional high of knocking off Ridgemont.Eastwood over FOSTORIA – Eastwood's lone loss was to No. 1-ranked Liberty Center. The Eagles have dominated their other three opponents.North Baltimore over WAYNESFIELD-GOSHEN – Tough road test for the Tigers. All teams face challenges, though. It's how they deal with them that counts.ELIDA over Ottawa-Glandorf – Titans got bit bad by the injury bug this season.MANCHESTER over Vanlue – Wildcats are facing a looooonnngg bus ride to southern Ohio, and a 4-0 Manchester team when they get there. Baker's PicksLast week: 12-1; overall 42-18Findlay over FREMONT ROSS – I'm starting to really believe in the Trojans' defense.McCOMB over Ada – One of Ada's statement wins in its first year of BVC play was when it bested McComb at home. This year, the Bulldogs face the Panthers on the road. That will be a tall task for Ada.LEIPSIC over Arcadia – Leipsic is one of three BVC teams going into Week 5 unbeaten. The Vikings will likely go into Week 6 that way, too.ARLINGTON over Pandora-Gilboa – Arlington took a little while to get going last week. Then, there was no stopping the Red Devils. P-G has the ability to hang with Arlington, but can the Rockets beat them? It will be tough.Liberty-Benton over ELMWOOD – Seth Elchert has eight touchdown receptions in four games. Guessing that number will go up Friday.Van Buren at RIVERDALE – Van Buren played a great first half last week at Van Buren. This week, the Black Knights will put four quarters together.SENECA EAST over Carey – Seneca East and Carey have had some fierce games over the years. No exception here.Upper Sandusky over WYNFORD – I'm not used to a world where Wynford is 1-3 and an underdog most weeks. But that's where we are.Bluffton over SPENCERVILLE – Bluffton played a close game against Ben Logan in Week 1. Haven't had one since.Columbus Grove over DELPHOS JEFFERSON – Grove got back to winning last week. That should continue.MARION ELGIN over Cory-Rawson – I can see how Cory-Rawson can keep this one close. But Elgin should come out on top.Eastwood at FOSTORIA – Eastwood's one loss came to undefeated Liberty-Center. Gonna be a tough one for the Redmen.North Baltimore over WAYNESFIELD-GOSHEN – What the heck? The Tigers are off to a great start.ELIDA over Ottawa-Glandorf – Hard to take the Titans until they get a W.MANCHESTER over Vanlue – I don't know a lot about Manchester, but the Greyhounds are 4-0.Home team in caps.
