Oilers hoping to 'finish' more on offense against Storm

The University of Findlay football team is off to a 2-0 start, but head coach Kory Allen said there are still some things the Oilers can do better. One thing, in particular. "We need to finish," Allen said. "That's what we need to do." The Oilers will look to do that Saturday, when they travel to Painsville for the Great Midwest Athletic Conference opener against Lake Erie College. The Storm enter the contest at 0-2. They were hammered by Ferris State, the top-ranked team in all of Division II, 63-6 in Week 1, then fell to Wheeling, 35-31, last week. Lake Erie has been led on offense by running back Nick Mosley, who is averaging six yards a carry. Findlay bested the Storm, 42-6, last year at Donnell Stadium. "It's an improving football team, and we knew that was gonna happen, because of (Storm head coach) David Price and what they believe in, and what they're trying to build there in Painesville," Allen said. "And I think that's evident when you watch them play." Not only is it the Oilers G-MAC opener, it's the first time they've played on the road this season. Allen said he enjoys the chance to travel with his squad. "There's something special about going on the road, when you take a smaller number of guys and you whittle the roster down a little bit and you go on the road and you accomplish your mission together as a team, as a group," Allen said. "We really, really lean into that, we're excited about it, but we always keep our prep during the week the same every week." When Allen talks about finishing, he's referring to last week, when Findlay's only points came on a 16-yard touchdown run by Christian Davis in the second quarter. "We need to be in sync. We weren't in sync on Saturday," Allen said. "We left a lot of yards out on the field." So how does UF fix that against Lake Erie? "There's been a lot of focus on improvement and communication throughout the course of the week, no doubt," Allen said. "Learn from the mistakes, be grateful that we were able to win the contest and grow and get better as a team." One thing that has been in sync through the first two weeks has been the defense. Not only did the Findlay defense yield only a field goal to Wayne State, but it also thwarted a potential go-ahead drive by the Warriors. Findlay's Adonai Bumba intercepted Wayne State's Champion Edwards at the UF 5 to seal the win. "It's a veteran group; there's veterans on all three levels, D-line, linebackers and secondary," Allen said of the defensive unit. "When you have guys that know how to communicate, get them in the right spots, then good things happen." Kickoff is at 2 p.m. Saturday.
