Findlay mourns fallen officer

FINDLAY — Findlay has been grieving the loss of former Findlay Police Officer John Schimmoeller this week, and many have taken to social media to voice their condolences. "It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of one of our own, Officer John Schimmoeller, who dedicated 29 years of distinguished service to our department and the Findlay community," wrote the Findlay Police Department in a social media post. "His dedication, strength, and compassion made a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him." Schimmoeller's funeral was Tuesday, at Gateway Church in Findlay. Afterwards, a procession brought him through town and eventually back to the church, with citizens lining the route in recognition. Family members were joined by local law enforcement both active and retired in the procession itself. The police department's post called Schimmoeller a respected, dedicated public servant of the Findlay community, a "trusted colleague" and a "steady presence throughout our ranks." "His contributions over nearly three decades reflect a deep commitment to duty, integrity, and the well-being of others," it reads. Hancock County Sheriff Mike Cortez called Schimmoeller's death a "profound loss" in his own post made on a sheriff's office's social media page. "We stand shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters during this time of grief," he wrote. Cortez also asked the community to keep Schimmoeller, his family and the FPD in their thoughts and prayers. Schimmoeller had been evening security officer at 50 North in Findlay. The senior center called the fallen officer a "kind and familiar presence" in its social media post. "Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, Bonnie, his family, the Findlay Police Department, his church family, and all who knew and loved him," 50 North's post reads. "We are grateful for his life of service and for the care he gave to his community." FPD's social media post reminded that those who wear badges "carry the weight of this work every day. "As we honor Officer Schimmoeller's life and legacy, we also recommit ourselves to looking after one another and ensuring that every member of our department knows they are never alone," it reads. "His absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him," it reads. The Fort Findlay Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #20 Foundation started a fundraiser to coordinate donations to Schimmoeller's family. "John was more than a police officer," the fundraiser's webpage states. "He was a friend, mentor, and steady presence who touched countless lives. ... By giving, you join others in honoring John's life of service and surrounding his loved ones with the same care and support he gave our community."
