Colina scores three times as Eagles roll past Continental

BOYS SOCCER FINDLAY -- Continental needed less than three minutes to score in Monday night's game at Liberty-Benton. The Pirates' Hunter Varner converted a penalty kick just 2:43 into the contest, and Continental was staked to a 1-0 lead. That advantage held for about nine minutes of game time. Then, Liberty-Benton went on a scoring barrage, beating the Pirates 6-1, and handing Continental its first loss of the season. Jairo Colina headed a pass from Brody Thomas into the net with 28:14 left in the half. Less than three minutes after that, Bryce Steinman scored off a Colina assist. Twenty-nine seconds later, Taden Troyer converted a pass from Aiden Hatch. With 25 minutes to go in the half, the Eagles led 3-1. They went on to defeat the Pirates, 6-1. Colina led things, scoring three times to go with his assist. Hatch added a goal and another assist, and Alex Boecker and Brody Thomas each added an assist for Liberty-Benton. Liberty-Benton outshot the Pirates 16-4. L-B goalkeeper Kooper Leatherman made three saves. Continental's Jayden Pitney made eight saves in goal; Reid Tegenkamp made 1. GOLF ANTHONY WAYNE INVITEWHITEHOUSE – The timing could not be better for Owen Vick and the Findlay High boys golf team.Vick took medalist honors in an elite field of golfers and led Findlay to a season-best score in the Anthony Wayne Invitational on Monday.Vick, a junior, toured the Toledo Country Club Course in 70 strokes. That helped Findlay post a season-low 304 team total.Cleveland St. Ignatius, a 25-time state qualifier and four-time state champion, ran away with the team title, posting a 288 score on a wet day. Cincinnati St. Xavier, which has made 47 appearances at state and won five state crowns, edged Findlay and Ottawa Hills by one stroke for second. D-I GIRLS SECTIONALARLINGTON – Findlay freshman Brynn Wells carded the best round of the day in leading the Trojans to a second-place finish in the Division I girls sectional golf tournament held at Arlington's Sycamore Springs Golf Course.Wells and Ashland's Elleni Miller posted rounds of 83. Ashland won the sectional title with a 368 team total. Findlay had a 376, with Ontario (393), Clyde (395) and Norwalk 419 rounding out the top five that will advance to the Division I district tournament Sept.30 at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green.Josey Weihrauch posted a 95, Lainey Ricker a 96 and Claire White a 102 for Findlay's team total.
