Van Buren girls 6th, L-B boys 11th after Day 1 of respective state tournaments

STATE GOLFDAYTON – The OHSAA Division II golf championships got underway on Monday, with Van Buren's girls team sixth and Liberty-Benton's boys team 11th in their respective tournaments.Liberty-Benton posted a 346 team total and was 11th in the boys Division II tournament being played at the NCR Country Club South Course in Dayton.Andrew Tomlinson and Jackson Knepper fired rounds of 85 and Luke Gerken carded an 86 for L-B. Asher Norman's 90 completed the Eagles' team total.Kettering Alter, seeking a fourth straight Division II state title, led the leaderboard after Monday's first round with a 314. Buckeye Valley, led by the 74 of medalist front-runner Sam Reynolds, was second at 316, one stroke ahead of Riverview (317).In the Division II girls state tournament being played at the Heartherwoode Golf Club in Springboro, Van Buren's Addyson Adams, competing at state for the fourth time in her prep career, had a first-round 75 and was eighth in the medalist standings.Lauren Hibbard carded a 90 for Van Buren, Jordan Patton had a 101 and Peyton Griffin a 111.Columbus Academy's Eva Lim, the defending Division II individual champion, again led the field with a first-round 70. Sophia Fink of Cincinnati Hills Christina Academy and Madeira's Ellie Hartung were a stroke back at 71.Led by Lim, Columbus Academy had a 317 to lead the field after day one. UF's Furlong namedINDIANAPOLIS – University of Findlay junior receiver Denny Furlong has been named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) Athlete of the Week after his performance in the Oilers' 31-10 win over Walsh on Saturday.Furlong had eight receptions for 156 yards and three touchdowns as the Oilers handed Walsh its first loss of the season.
