Tribal Land Stripped of Trust Status by U.S Judge, Halting Casino Development

68-acres of tribal land has been stripped of its trust status by a U.S. federal judge. The land had previously been held in trust for the Koi Nation of Northern Carolina, but it lost this status in the new ruling. As such, the tribe's plans to build a new brick-and-mortar casino in Sonoma County has met a significant hurdle that they may not be able to overcome. In fact, though the tribe still claims ownership of the land, they will not be able to proceed with any casino development unless the current ruling is overturned. Despite laws and regulations differing between states, gambling has remained a significantly popular pastime amongst countless American adults. The news has been welcomed and celebrated by the Federated Indians of Granton Rancheria (FIGR) who are the current operators of the nearby Granton Resort and Casino in Rohnert Park. Since this complex is currently the largest and one of the most successful brick-and-mortar casinos in the area, they are likely relieved to not have competition appearing so close to their own establishment. The establishments which the Koi Nation hoped to develop would have been a 530,000 foot-square casino. Inside which would have been held 2,750 gaming devices and over 100 table games. Alongside this they had plans to construct a 400-room hotel which would have provided accommodation for gamblers and attracted more customers from far out places. The Koi Nation, who are a relatively small band of Pomo Native Americans, secured the parcel back in 2021 for a total of $12.3 million. This deeply upset the FIGR, who then went on to sue the U.S Department of the Interior on two separate occasions, accusing the federal officials of failing to consult on the cultural resources that were available to them, and accepting the Koi's historical ties to the land without proper research or understanding. Judge Lin eventually agreed with this sentiment, stating that the Interior had, in her words, "railroaded the [Granton] tribe at every turn] during its approval of the Koi Nations' claim.
