NB library receives art education award

NORTH BALTIMORE – The North Baltimore Public Library has received an award from the Ohio Art Education Association. The library was recognized as a Distinguished Business/Organization for Art Education. Through this recognition, the OAEA is able to show its appreciation for the generous contributions from the North Baltimore community that support their work with Ohio's art students. The library was nominated for its After-School Art class that is co-sponsored by Happy Camper Art Studio and the North Baltimore Public Schools. The class is taught by Erika Miklovic, of Happy Camper Art Studio and an art educator with North Baltimore Local Schools. Sessions are offered every other week during the school year for all interested students in grades 2-8. "We've been incredibly fortunate to partner with Erika Miklovic and Happy Camper Art Studio, which has truly enriched our community," said Holly Ryder, director of the North Baltimore library. Ryder said Miklovic brings her skills and experiences into the library, providing the children with a unique perspective on art. "The joy they express while creating is heartwarming, and it's clear that their engagement has made a significant difference," said Ryder. As a member of the OAEA, Miklovic was able to nominate the library for the award during the annual conference last fall. Nominations were gathered from members all over Northwest Ohio and then all of the OAEA art teachers from Northwest Ohio voted. "The North Baltimore Public Library has demonstrated exceptional leadership in supporting and advancing art education in our community. Their willingness to embrace this partnership and provide a welcoming space for young artists has made a lasting impact," said Miklovic. In the spring of 2024, she made the difficult decision to close her physical studio space, the Happy Camper Art Studio. During a conversation with Ryder, the idea to collaborate and continue the After-School Art program emerged. With the support of the school district's superintendent and elementary principal, the vision became a reality through the Community Education outreach efforts. "For the past four years, I have conducted weekly art meetups where children explore various artistic mediums, including self-directed open studio sessions and structured studies in watercolor, acrylic painting, mixed media, and sculpture," Miklovic said. "These sessions have consistently welcomed eight to 12 students, with space being the only limitation at our former studio." Recognizing the need for accessible art education, particularly for children facing financial barriers, Miklovic's goal has always been to provide high-quality art opportunities to all, regardless of their economic background. By partnering with the library, the After-School Art program has expanded to reach a broader audience, ensuring that every child has access to enriching artistic experiences. After closing of the art studio, Miklovic donated all of her remaining art supplies to the library for use in this program. "Through generous community donations, we have successfully secured the necessary materials to sustain this initiative," she added. Ryder said the staff can tell how much of an impact the programming has had on the students. "Recently, we had a cartoonist visit the library, and he was genuinely impressed by the kids' drawing skills and their love for art," she said. "He mentioned that he doesn't often see this level of enthusiasm elsewhere, and it was great to explain to him that it's all thanks to Happy Camper Art Studio." The library is also grateful for the community sponsors who make it possible for Miklovic to come to the library which showcases the power of collaboration, said Ryder. "Art is not just an activity for the kids," she said. "It's a source of joy for them and their parents."
