Patrol urges drivers to be cautious of deer

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is asking motorists to exercise caution on the roadways as deer-related crashes tend to rise across the state beginning in early November. The increase in deer-related crashes this time of year is attributed to a combination of deer breeding season being at its peak and the end of daylight-saving time, according to a release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Deer activity dramatically increases between dusk and dawn, and when road visibility is low. Since the beginning of 2020, there have been 108,047 deer-involved crashes on Ohio roadways, with 48 of those being fatal and resulting in 49 total deaths, the release states. Although they are involved in just 1% of deer-related accidents, motorcyclists account for 81% of the fatalities. Ohio State Highway Patrol Superintendent Colonel Charles A. Jones said that it's important for drivers to actively pay attention to the road and be proactive about seasonal hazards such as deer activity. "We strongly encourage drivers to slow down, eliminate distractions and always be prepared to stop their vehicle," Jones said. Safety tips for drivers to avoid an accident: • Be extra cautious between sunset and sunrise, as deer tend to be the most active. • When driving, look past your headlights and actively scan the road for deer. • Deer tend to travel in groups; if you spot one, there are likely others nearby. • If you're unable to avoid a collision, it's important to apply your brakes and stay in your lane, as swerving could cause a more severe crash. • After the crash, safely pull off the roadway and call 911 or your nearest Patrol post to report it. Do not approach the injured deer. "By staying alert and committing to safe driving practices, you can significantly reduce your risk of being involved in a crash," the release states. "Always drive defensively, observe the posted speed limits, and eliminate distractions to ensure everyone arrives to their destination safely."
