On No Kings Years ago when my brain and bones were younger I remember sitting in the newly converted Central Jr. High in my 9th-grade civics class. We learned about our amazing Constitution, Congress, Supreme Court and how good citizens should exercise their right to vote. It was the mid-60's, and except for the assassination of John F. Kennedy, it was a good time to be alive. It was the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave ... for most. Then talk started about a new war far away in Asia. Soon that brought civil unrest and then Peter, Paul & Mary, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez picked up their guitars and started singing stirring songs about peace, freedom, equality, and love. Many demonstrated in the streets. Then the shooting at Kent State happened here in O-HI-O as memorialized in the song about the National Guard killing four students at a college who were protesting the Vietnam War. We somehow got through that division and it seemed like we were slowly healing and getting to actually see some peace, freedom, equality and love. Now, again people are divided and some are out there once again protesting and others are berating them. Our democracy is threatened. It would be easier to stay home, but some of us go out and try to get our point across in a legal way precisely because we do love our country. We are peaceably trying to inform our fellow citizens that our country is in distress. Many issues bother us such as our health insurance, education, unidentified masked agents arresting people, reporters silenced, etc. The point is our president is doing whatever he wants, like he thinks he is a king, even tearing down the East Wing of the White House without approval. We the People need to — feel obliged to — have a responsibility to — try to save our country from those who are not following the Constitution that they swore to preserve and protect.
