Where to find healthcare services

SANDUSKY — Organizers of the Minority Health and Wellness Fair coming this Saturday urged everyone to join them at the Nehemiah Center at Campbell School from noon until 2:30 p.m. for better information about better healthcare services.Tory Yarbro, Saprina Durr, Susan Shickley and Frankie Byrd, members of the minority health coalition, were guests recently on "Between the Lines," the Register's public affairs talk program.Yarbro said the health fair is designed to help people better understand their health care options"We want to provide information and resources to people throughtout the community," Yarbro said. "We want to make sure minorities have the information and access to the healthcare they deserve."A county health assessment survey shows some members of the community — and especially minorities — aren't aware they have access to services. Durr, a nurse at Firelands Regional Medical Center, said race and age barriers might hinder someone from seeking medical advice or asking questions of their doctors and nurses. "Too often, too many times when minority people go to a hospital they say, 'Whoa, I only see white people here,' and I have to say, 'no. I'm here. I work here.'"Shickley, a program coordinator with the Ohio Extention office, said Eric Jordan from Next Level Fitness will be at the fair and OHgo, the mobile food bank, also will be there. Shickley works with food services SNAP education for the extension office. "We're going to be teaching from pre-school through senior citizens about eating healthy and exercising on a budget," Shipley said. About a dozen healthcare service providers will be at the fair, and Byrd said anyone with any health concern — including mental health care — will be able to get assistance finding the right services for them. "We're also going to be talking about the advantages of getting an early mammogram screening," said Frankie Byrd, a community outreach representative for Firelands Regional Medical Center's Susan G. Koman Foundation.The first 100 people who attend the fair will receive a free wellness kit, a backpack filled with supplies and information how to stay healthy, Yarbro said.*"Between the Lines" is brought to you by Serving Our Seniors, as a public service.
