ROSS 63FINDLAY 51FINDLAY – The lineup Fremont Ross put on the floor against Findlay on Tuesday indicated the Little Giants might be building for the future.The way the Little Giants played, though, indicated the future might be now.Freshmen Brynn Ward, Sara Oman and Julia Norris combined for 38 points and sophomore Charity Crowe had 14 as Fremont Ross overcame a slow start with a big second half and beat Findlay 63-51 in a Northern Lakes League cross-over game at the FHS Gymnasium.Findlay led 7-4 early. Ross went ahead with a 17-8 edge in the second quarter, then beat back a number of Findlay rallies to pull away in the second half.Ward led the Little Giants with 19 points, scoring 10 of her total in the fourth quarter. Crowe had 14, Oman 10 and Norris nine for Ross, which has no seniors and just three juniors on its 13-player varsity roster.Findlay got some solid play from talented underclassmen as well. Ava Stechschulte, a 5-foot-8 freshman guard was 7-of-8 from the line and led the Trojans with 15 points. BVC Roundup Round one of what could be an interesting and intense Blanchard Valley Conference girls basketball season kicked off on Tuesday with a full slate of games.Liberty-Benton, competing in the BVC for the last season before moving over to the Cardinal Division of the Northern Lakes League, is the reigning BVC girls champion. But the Eagles did not go unbeaten in league play, finishing 9-1 in the BVC to edge McComb (8-2) and Riverdale (8-2) by one game in the standing.The competitive level of play in the BVC should be high considering the returning talent around the league. Last season, 18 girls earned first-, second- or third-team all-BVC recognition and 14 of them return, including BVC Player of the Year Morgan Kern, a junior guard for McComb.ARLINGTON 49ARCADIA 47ARCADIA – Arlington outscored Arcadia 14-9 in the second quarter and 19-16 in the fourth to earn a 49-47 win over the Redskins in the Blanchard Valley Conference girls basketball opener for both teams.Jada Smith, who was second-team all-BVC last season, led the Red Devils.
