Late surge lifts Team Ohio over Trojans

PREP HOCKEY TEAM OHIO 6 FINDLAY &emsp;&emsp;1 FINDLAY – Team Ohio broke a 1-1 tie with a five-goal explosion in the third period in beating Findlay 6-1 on Friday in the opening game of the Jamie Ruffner Memorial Hockey Tournament being hosted by Findlay and Bowling Green. Draven Wilson gave Findlay a 1-0 lead on a first-period goal assisted by Louis DiBerardino. Team Ohio, a USA Hockey Tier II program with a 7-1 record that draws its roster from a number of schools in the Cleveland area, tied the game in the second period, then cut loose with its five goal barrage in the third. Brett Flanagan made 14 saves in goal for Findlay, now 2-2 on the season. The Trojans are on home ice again today when they face University School at 11 a.m. and Olentangy at 5 p.m. in second round games at The Cube. Findlay will play its final game of the tournament Sunday at 11 a.m. BOYS BASKETBALL ARLINGTON 61 FT. JENNINGS 38 ARLINGTON – Coming off a Final Four appearance, Arlington got its 2025-26 season off to a flying start on Friday when the Red Devils defeated Fort Jennings 61-38 in a nonleague boys basketball matchup. Three senior veterans led Arlington, which went 24-4 last season and reached the Division VII state semifinals under long-time head coach Jason Vermillion (435-197). Trenton Heacock, a 5-foot-11 guard, pumped in 17 points, 6-1 senior Aiden Cavinee had 14 and Calvin Willow, a 6-10 post, had 13. The Red Devils led Fort Jennings just 27-25 at the half, but outscored the Musketeers 36-13 in the third and fourth quarters. Arlington was 21-of-33 on shots in the paint. The Red Devils, who host another Putnam County League foe today when Kalida is in town, outscored Fort Jennings 8-1 from the line and turned the ball over just three times. Landon Stechschulte scored 12 points and Adler Pothast had eight for Fort Jennings, which also advanced to the Division VII regional tournament last season. FT. JENNINGS (0-1) L. Colten Kelbley and Blayse Beard scored 13 points each to lead Lakota. Nick Elchert converted 8-of-11 free throws and added 10 points for the Raiders, who led 44-38 after three quarters. Arcadia's Isaac Stoner knocked down four 3-pointers and led all scorers with 19 points. Grady Bronston added 13 points and Tripp Brubaker had nine. And that was just in the first quarter. Fortman, O-G's 6-foot-4 senior wing, scored 15 points in the first quarter and had 22 overall as the Titans crushed Emmanuel Christian 81-14. O-G led 31-4 after one period of play and 55-9 at the half. Emmanuel Christian did not score a point in the third quarter, the second time in two games the Titans have shut a team out for an entire period.
