Next stop: Big upgrades on tap for Sandusky Transit, Amtrak stations

SANDUSKY — Crews shifted into overdrive to make some necessary repairs inside Sandusky Transit's headquarters.Work recently began to upgrade flooring inside what's called the depot station, which houses city-based public transportation operations.The $45,000 project, being paid for with local funds, calls for contractors installing a new foundation system inside this 126-year-old structure."It's needed due to a degradation of the floor due to termites and water infiltration into the basement and crawl space," transit administrator Marvin Ranaldson said.The job should end by mid-December. Next stopsRanaldson also budgeted city money in 2017 for several more facility improvements around transit offices, located beside the Amtrak Station on North Depot Street."We want to improve security, accessibility and the usability of the facility with the goal of making the facility capable of handling intercity buses, like GO Bus and Greyhound, local bus services in addition to the 10,000 passengers that use the facility for Amtrak service," he said.Ranaldson also wants to commit some city money for a train platform rehabilitation project. It's the area where people stand when boarding or exiting trains."It's designed to address the deterioration of the original platform that abuts the stations, which has become hazardous as the platform has deteriorated over the last five decades," Ranaldson said.
