Gonder leads Findlay at Trojan Duals

Wrestling FINDLAY DUALS FINDLAY – Findlay High's Tyler Gonder won three of his four matches – all by pin – on Saturday when the Trojans opened their 2025-26 wrestling season by hosting the Lee's Chicken/Findlay Duals.Massillon Perry, Ohio's Division I state runner-up last season, defeated Harrison head-to-head for the team title. Findlay was tenth in the 14-school field.Gonder went 3-1 in the 215-pound weight class. Alex Apple (190), Lincoln Kirian (157), Kaliber Brubaker (120), Madison Smith (138), Cameron Trice (165), Caleb Kanney and Parker Snider (144) and went 2-2 on the day, with Brubaker and Kanney scoring both of their ins by pin.Findlay returns to the mats on Thursday when the Trojans travel to Fremont Ross for a dual meet. VAN BUREN DUALS VAN BUREN – Three Van Buren wrestlers posted 5-0 records and three others dropped just one match each on Saturday when the Black Knights placed second to Marion Pleasant in the Van Buren Duals.Van Buren scored well in the upper middle-weights divisions, especially at 175, 190 and 215. Drew Phillips, a returning first-team all-BVC wrestler, went 5-0 at 190 and Landon Miller was 5-0 at 215. Tommy Basinger posted a 4-1 record at 175.Another Van Buren veteran this season, first-teamer Brooks Hills, posted a 4-1 record at 157. Max Wagner was unbeaten (5-0) at 120, Johnie Omlor was 5-1 at 150, and Taden McCade was 2-0 at 285.Keegan Martin (126), Cooper Hanna (132) and Jacob Harrington (138) all went 3-2 in their respective weight class matches. CORY-RAWSON DUALSRAWSON – Led by tournament MVP Eli Farbrother, Archbold won the team title of the Cory-Rawson Wrestling Duals on Saturday.Ada and Cory-Rawson went 2-3 in the round-robin event.Ada's Layne Simon at 175 and Cory-Rawson 113-pounder Hayden Walters both went 5-0 in their matches. Walters had four pins and Simon three.Ada's Case Viera (106), Carter Dunlap (113) and Silas Robart (126) and Cory-Rawson's Wesley Thomas (132), Logan Blair (150) and Zach Wooton (285) all went 4-1.Three Ottawa-Glandorf wrestlers – Griffin Kottenbrock (157), Evan Rosengarten (190) and Caleb Puffer (285) – won all five of their matches. Landon Baumgartner (106) was 4-1. ASHLAND INVITATIONALASHLAND – Carey freshman Fisher Montgomery, already ranked No. 8 in the state by the BOROFANOHIO.net prep wrestling site, backed up that ranking by winning the 113-pound championship at the Ashland Invitational on Saturday.Payne Stoops (126) and Jordan Hertel (150) placed fourth and Brady Atkinson (175) was fifth for Carey. The Blue Devils were tenth among 16 schools in the team standings. Swimming COLUMBUS – Findlay High's Tillie Abbott posted top-16 times in two freestyle events on Saturday at the annual Ned Reeb Invitational Swim meet held at Ohio State University.A sophomore and a two-event state qualifier last season at Findlay High, Abbott finished 11th on Saturday in the 100-yard freestyle (53.89) and 16th in the 50 free (25.02). In the boys meet, Jake Best was 20th in the 200 free (1:52.25) and swam a leg on the 19th-place 200 free relay (1:33.229) with Nick Kasiborski, Stephan Mahler and Kai Borsay.The Ned Reeb Invitational, the largest prep meet in the state outside of the OHSAA championships, got underway with diving competition on Friday.
