Generals use second-half rally to stop Trojans

BOYS BASKETBALL WHITEHOUSE – Anthony Wayne used an 8-0 run to get back in the game, and a 10-0 run to put that game in the win column when the Generals outlasted Findlay 67-57 on Tuesday in a Northern Lakes League Buckeye Division matchup.Buoyed by one of its best stretches of the young season, Findlay outscored Anthony Wayne 25-15 in the second quarter to turn a 20-17 deficit into a 42-35 halftime lead. When Miles Bailey drained a 3-pointer to open the third-period scoring, the Trojans owned a 10-point, 45-35 lead.Anthony Wayne would outscore Findlay 32-12 the rest of the way, though, and 3-pointers and 3-point plays would be the fuel that ignited the comeback.Mason Taylor started AW's rally when he converted a 3-point play. Ethan Robison followed with a 3-pointer that trimmed the deficit to 45-43.Blade Wendt answered for Findlay and Bronson Drew knocked down a 3. Cole Gast converted four free throws, though, and Anthony Trombley, who averages 12 points a game but was scoreless in the first half, hit a basket. When Robison scored off a steal to end the period, Findlay's 10-point lead had disappeared and the Generals were up 51-50.Anthony Wayne used a hot hand by Trombley to blow the game open. The 6-foot-3 senior knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to open the fourth-quarter scoring and Noah Morrow nailed another.Wendt, who led Findlay with 18 points, would get two baskets and Drew another. Cole Gast, Anthony Wayne's top scorer with 15 points, scored inside, though, and the Generals converted 5-of-6 free throws in the final minutes to keep Findlay at bay.Mason Taylor backed Gast with 13 points, Trombley had 10 – all in the second half – and Jimmy Chitwood and Robison added nine each in a balanced attack by Anthony Wayne (4-1, 1-0 NLL).Bailey added 11 points and Marcus Bishop had nine in Findlay's NLL Buckeye Division opener. SWIMMING Findlay's strength and depth in the freestyle events paid off on Tuesday when the FHS boy swim team beat Perrysburg 108-66 in a Northern Lakes League meet at the University of Findlay's Sink Natatorium."We were prepared all week for a heavyweight match," said FHS coach Jason Chomic."I told the boys all day, get to the sprint events, the sprint freestyle events are our strength, if we can hold on and get to the sprint events then we have a shot."In the girls meet, Perrysburg had a bit more depth in posting a 96-68 win over the Trojans.Findlay's boys placed first in five of the six freestyle events and sophomore Kai Borsay figured in four of them.Borsay won the 50- (23.75) and 100-yard (52.55) freestyle events, and swam a leg on the first place 200 (1:35.28) and 400 (3:36.24) free relays with Jake Best and Nicholas Kasiborski. Maddox Debelak completed the foursome in the 200 free relay, with Jax Dean the fourth man in the 400 relay.Best also won the 200 free (1:52.76) and the 100 butterfly (56.19). Debelak captured the 100 backstroke (1:00.290) and Joe Dusseau was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.21).Debeak, Dusseau, Dean and Duncan Black earned Findlay another first in the 200 medley relay (1:51.39).Tillie Abbott was in on three wins for the FHS girls team. Abbott touched the wall first in the 100 (53.35) and 200 (1:57.89) freestyles and teamed with Ava Blide, Eden Kempf and Norah Dolan on the winning 400 free relay (4:07.29).Megan Guthrie added a first in diving (197.70) for Findlay, which will be competing Friday (diving) and Saturday (swimming) at the Northwest Ohio Classic Invitational at BGSU.
