Kanney gets crown, Findlay first at Carey Classic

BOYS WRESTLING CAREY CLASSIC CAREY – Findlay had one individual champion on Saturday –175-pounder Caleb Kanney – but the Trojans had four runner-up placers and scored enough points to take the team crown at the 50th Carey Classic Saturday.Findlay finished with 234 ½ points, outdistancing second place Patrick Henry, which scored 207.Carey, which had three champions, finished fourth with 173 ½ points. Arcadia placed sixth (97), while McComb took ninth (80).Hopewell-Loudon was 11th with 73 points and Ottawa-Glandorf was 12th with 65 ½ points.Carey's Fisher Montgomery (120 pounds), Payne Stoops (126) and Jordan Hertel (150) collected individual championships. Stoops defeated Findlay's Alex Mendoza for the 126-pound crown. Parker Snider (144) notched a runner-up finish for FindlayMeanwhile, Patrick Henry's Kayden Robinette scored a tech fall on Arcadia's Chandlar Derck 20-5 for the 106 title.McComb's Ashtin Gallagher pinned Findlay's Fred Lopez for 132-pound title. At 138 pounds, Patrick Henry's Layke Schweibert topped FHS' Robert Palmer in the title match.The Patriots' Trent Johnson won the crown at 190 pounds, while Ottawa-Glandorf's Caleb Pulfer won the title at 285 pounds. ADA INVITATIONAL ADA – Van Buren won the team title and several area wrestlers were weight class champions at the Ada Invitational on Saturday.Van Buren outdistanced Spencerville 160.5-142 in the team standings. Fostoria was third (135.5), Cory-Rawson eighth 84.5), Ada and Riverdale in a tie for ninth (82) and Columbus Grove 13th (72).Van Buren's Drew Phillips won the 175-pound division, pinning Spencerville's Conner Heistan in 56 seconds in the championship match.Brooks Hill, who achieved his 100th career pin and 150th career win a week earlier, placed second at 144. Cooper Hanna (132) and Landon Miller (190) also placed second in their weight classes, Max Wagner (120) was fourth, and Johnnie Omlor (150), Tommy Basinger (165) and Luke Martin (215) finished fifth.Ada had a pair of individual champions, with Carter Dunlap beating Convoy Crestview's Dylan Cress in the 106-pound final and Silas Riblet scoring an overtime win over Crestview's Robert Tyas at 126. Kale Pedersen (138) was fourth and Ethan Carl (175) fifth.Riverdale's Grady Phelps continued his successful sophomore season. Ranked No. 3 in the Division III state rankings at 144, Phelps scored a 16-1 technical fall win over Van Buren's Hill in that final,Riverdale's Kydin Reed was also a tournament champion with his 5:30 pin over Miller in the 190-pound final. Cohen Phillips (138) was fifth for the Falcons.Fostoria's Anthony Kleinmark won a close 12-11 decision to claim the title at 157. Silas Raney (165) was second for the Redmen, Barrett Hernandez (144), Ezekiel Sensabaugh (150) and Cyrus Flores (215) placed third and Huelett North (126) was fifth.Two Columbus Grove wrestlers pinned their way to individual titles. Griffin Zares pinned Cory-Rawson's Zyven Smith in 41 seconds in the 113-pound final, and Jacob Palte won by pin at 120.In addition to Smith, Cory-Rawson's Hayden Walters was third at 120. Pandora-Gilboa's Maddox Blank (165) also had a third-place finish in the meet. GIRLS WRESTLING GIBSONBURG INVITATIONAL GIBSONBURG -- Carey's girls wrestling team got a pair of runner-up finishes, and the Blue Devils finished fifth out of 30 teams. Carey 140-pounder Lydia Black and Dakota McKinney each took second place at the event. The Blue Devils' Addi Hertel and Claire DeAmicis added fourth-place finishes. HOCKEY FINDLAY 5 ST. JOHN'S JESUIT 2 FINDLAY -- Findlay scored foul goals in the third period -- two were short-handed -- and the Trojans knocked off St. John's Saturday, 5-2 at The Cube. Findlay trailed the Titans 2-1 with 12:13 left in regulation when Colin Sommerville scored off a Draven Wilson assist to tie things at 2. With 7:23 remaining in the game, Findlay was hit with a five-minute penalty. Less than a minute later, Somerville scored again, with Wilson assisting again, for a 3-2 advantage. With 6:09 remaining, Findlay struck again. This time it was Jackson Flechtner scoring off a Jaron Clark assist. It was the second time in the game Flechtner scored off a Clark assist; the two combined for Findlay's first goal early in the second period. Wilson capped Findlay's scoring by converting assists from Clark and Louis DiBerardino with 1:50 left. For the Titans, Roman Junke scored a power-play goal off a Paxton Lewis assist with 5:48 left in the first. After Findlay tied it, St. John's Jesuit went up 2-1 on a second-period goal from Xander Lewis. Paxton Lewis assisted on the goal. Findlay (14-15-1) goalie Brett Flanagan made 18 saves. The Trojans' defense killed off five of six power plays. St. John's Jesuit goalkeeper Reid Parton made 16 saves as the Titans dropped to 2-24-2. Findlay will return to the ice Thursday when it has a rematch with Titans at the Huntington Center.
