USV ousts Cory-Rawson from sectional tournament

USV 52 CORY-RAWSON 47 McGUFFEY – Upper Scioto Valley outlasted Cory-Rawson 52-47 on Wednesday and ousted the Hornets from the Division VII girls sectional basketball tournament. Layla Hunsicker poured in 25 points for USV (10-13). Chloe Cunningham added 13 points for the Rams, who advance to Saturday's sectional final at Leipsic where they will take on the 8-14 Vikings. Addyson Duffman scored 19 points and Katelyn Duffman had 18 for Cory-Rawson. The Hornets ended their season at 5-18. Boys Basketball RIVERDALE 51 KENTON 34 MOUNT BLANCHARD – Riverdale's boys basketball team continued its recent run on Wednesday, beating Kenton 51-34 for its second straight win and third in four games. Riverdale jumped ahead 28-16 at the half and capped its victory with a 14-8 edge in the fourth quarter. Hayden Scott pumped in 19 points for the Falcons, who upped their record to 13-7 heading into weekend home games with Pandora-Gilboa on Friday and Upper Scioto Valley on Saturday. Kenton fell to 2-18. Wrestling NAPOLEON – The biggest battle may be for runner-up honors on Saturday when Northern Lakes League schools travel to Napoleon for the 2026 league wrestling tournament. Perrysburg owns 24 NLL wrestling championships, and has taken the past two Buckeye Division crowns easily. A year ago, the Yellow Jackets placed first in 12 of the 14 weight classes and generated 351 team points, more than double the 146.5 total of second place Toledo Whitmer. Findlay was third with 90. This season, Perrysburg has 13 wrestlers state ranked on the BOROFANOHIO.net website. Especially strong at the lighter weights, Perrysburg has five wrestlers ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in the state between the 106- and 138-pound divisions. Findlay's Keegan Klotz was NLL runner-up at 175 last season and Will Jolliff was fourth at 120. Both graduated but three underclassmen also placed a year ago. Kaliber Brubaker, ranked No. 30 in Division I at 120, was sixth at 126 last season. Caleb Kanney was fourth at 165 and Luke Smith fifth at 150. Findlay and area schools will take part in sectional tournament competition on Feb. 28 and district meets on March 6 and 7. BVC WRESTLING VAN BUREN – Liberty-Benton and Van Buren, who each have won five league championships in the past 10 years, are expected to be the top contenders again when the 2026 Blanchard Valley Conference wrestling tournament is held Saturday at Van Buren. Elmwood, BVC runner-up the past two years, is expected to be in the mix as well, along with Arcadia and Cory-Rawson. Arcadia took home second-place honors in 2021 and 2017; Cory-Rawson was third just last year. With three state-ranked wrestlers in the field, the 190-pound competition could be one of the premier brackets of the tournament. Riverdale's Kydin Reid is ranked 14th in that division by prep wrestling site BOROFANOHIO.net, Liberty-Benton's Andrew Berger is No. 25 and Van Buren's Landon Miller is 27th. A number of other weight classes could feature matchups of state-ranked wrestlers as well. At 150, Arcadia's Kale Price is ranked 19th in Division III and McComb's Brody Gallaghjer is No. 28. At 144 Van Buren's Brooks Hill is 27th and Elmwood's McKoy Morlock is 40th. Riverdale sophomore Grady Phelps is seeded highest. He's No. 3 at 138, while Elmwood's Zach Schafer is 22nd. Other state-ranked wrestlers include Liberty-Benton's Ben Beard (27th, 165), Van Buren's Drew Phillips (17th, 175), Ada's Silas Riblet (26th, 126) and Elmwood's Evan Strausbaugh (27th, 132). The Northern 10 Conference championships will also be held Saturday with Seneca East serving as the host. Carey's Fisher Montgomery (12th, 120) and Jordan Hertel (18th, 150) are two state-ranked wrestlers for Carey, which won last year's N10 title and ended Mohawk's five-year reign atop the standings. Upper Sandusky returns three defending N10 champions in Braylon Shepherd (106), Graham Wright (113) and Jordan Hertel, who is ranked No. 8 in the state at 157 in Division II. Gymnastics TOLEDO – Perrysburg did not have one gymnast place among the top ten in the all-around standings at last year's Northern Lakes League tournament. The Yellow Jackets depth and tradition, though, stamps them as the team to beat once again when the 2025-26 NLL championship is held Friday at the Exceleration Gymnastics Center in Toledo. Perrysburg has won 10 straight NLL gymnastics titles and returns nine letter winners – three of them state qualifiers – from a team that outscored Anthony Wayne 135.925 to 130.425 in the 2024-25 league meet. Findlay was third a year ago (127.15), and returns two all-NLL award winners in Renee Metzger and Josey Weihrauch. Metzger was the 2025 NLL Gymnasts of the Year after placing in the top ten in vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercises and finishing first in the all-around standings (33.900). Weihrauch, a state qualifier for the Trojans, was third (33.000) in the NLL all-around scoring. Following the NLL meet, Findlay will continue preparations for the Northwest District meet Feb. 27 at Bowling Green State University and the state meet March 7 (team) and March 8 (individual) at Hilliard Bradley.
