Genoa holds off L-B for district title

GENOA 52L-BENTON 48MILLER CITY – Liberty-Benton got Genoa's Makenna Moritz to two-the-line on Saturday.Every time she did, though, Moritz was piling up a bunch of points.Moritz stepped to the 3-point line and nailed four treys on Saturday. The 5-foot-10 junior did most of her damage from the foul line, though, sinking 14-of-24 free throws and scoring 34 points as the Comets edged the Eagles 52-48 in a Division IV district championship game played at Miller City.Genoa advances to the Division IV regional semifinals to face London Wednesday at 6 p.m. Liberty-Benton ended its season at 19-6.Liberty-Benton forged a 29-24 lead at the half but managed just five points in the third quarter. That allowed Genoa, thanks to eight free throws by Moritz in the period, to catch up.Moritz – and Genoa – continued a parade to the foul line in the final period. The Comets did cool off a bit, but still managed to convert 8-of-12 chances to hold on. Moritz, who surpassed 1,000 career points this season, was 5-of-8 from the line and scored 10 points in the fourth quarter.Emilia Kin, a 6-foot freshman, had 17 points and nine rebounds for Liberty-Benton. Division VIMINSTER 54RIVERDALE 30LIMA – Riverdale had a tough game offensively – it managed just three points in the first quarter and had just 15 at the start of the fourth – and fell to Minster in a Division VI district final in Lima, 54-30.Jenna Belcher scored 15 points for Minster and Sophia Dirksen added 14 as the Wildcats improved to 20-5.Minster led 29-7 at the half. BALTIMORE 45ARCHBOLD – Stryker ended the first quarter on a 16-0 run, led 18-8 after the first quarter, and went on to defeat North Baltimore in a Division VII district final in Archbold, 57-45.Lacie Allison, who scored more than 800 points for the Tigers this season, put up 31 as North Baltimore ended the season with a 21-4 record.Allison made four 3-pointers; teammate Avery Benedict had two and finished with six points.Stryker's Grace Froelich led the Panthers (21-4) with 14 points.
