DiBerardino delivers for Findlay in OT

HOCKEY BOWLING GREEN – Findlay's hockey team found itself in a situation where a goal would not only win a game, but extend a season.In the district final at Bowling Green State University Saturday night, Perrysburg and the Trojans – meeting for the third time this season – went to overtime with the game tied at 2.The Trojans needed someone to deliver.Louis DiBerardino was more than happy to oblige.With 4:56 remaining in the extra session, DiBerardino found the back of the net, and Findlay advanced to next week's regional tournament with a 3-2 win.Draven Wilson and Collin Somerville assisted on the game-winning score.Findlay improved to 18-15-1, and will return to BGSU Thursday for an 8:40 p.m. Regional game.Perrysburg – which split its two regular season games with the Trojans, took a 1-0 lead with 9:56 to go in the opening period when Jack Switala found the back of the net off assists from Anthony Mazzullo and Darian Douglas.It took about a minute for Findlay to respond.Wilson scored off assists from DiBerardino and Monika Kerwin with 8:37 left in the period.Nine seconds later, Findlay had the lead. Collin Somerville found the back of the net off a Mac Archer assist, and Findlay was up 2-1.The Trojans maintained that advantage until the second period.At the 10:30 mark, the Yellow Jackets' Seth Haney tied the game, scoring off assists from Noah Church and Will Snyder.It stayed 2-2 until DiBerardino sent everyone home in OT.Brett Flanagan played in goal for the Trojans, and made 27 saves. Perrysburg goalkeeper Jake Dombek made 30 saves.The Yellow Jackets finished the season 19-12-1.Findlay has now won five consecutive games. SWIMMING CANTON – Findlay High's Tillie Abbott posted some of her best times of the season and earned all-Ohio honors in two events at the 2026 Division I state swim meet at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.A sophomore, Abbott posted a time of 51.55 seconds and placed fifth in the championship finals of the 100-yard freestyle. Abbott also qualified for the A finals in the 50 free and finished seventh in a time of 23.85. GYMNASTICS BOWLING GREEN – Findlay had two individual champions and placed third in the team standings on Saturday when the Trojans competed in the 2026 Northwest District gymnastics meet at Bowling Green State University.Josey Weihrauch and Renee Metzger earned district championships with first-place efforts. Weihrauch posted a score of 9.000 in winning the vault. The FHS junior, a state qualifier a yeara go, also place second on the uneven bars (8.650). Metzger earned the top score on the balance beam, a 9.225.Weihrauch and Metzger both qualified for this week's state meet at Hilliard Davidson High School by placing among the top six gymnasts in the all-around scoring.In addition to her first- and second-place scores, Weihrauch was sixth on floor exercises (8,850) and 18th on beam (8.225). Her all-around score of 34.725 was third best overall.In addition to her first place points on beam, Metzger was eighth on vault (8.650), 12th on bars (7.950) and floor (8.700) and fourth all-around (34.525).Madalyn Oman, who attends Cory-Rawson but trains with Findlay, punched het ticket to state as well.Oman was second on vault (8.950), fourth on bars (8.525), ninth on beam (8.7000) and 11th on floor (8.700). She placed second in the all-around standings with 34.875 points.Findlay's Avalon Sprang placed sixth on vault (8.800) and Bella Lonaker was tenth on beam (8.625).Perrysburg won the team title. Anthony Wayne also qualified for state by placing second. Findlay edged Springfield for third in the team standings.Based on their placings, Weihrauch, Metzger, Sprang, Lonaker and Oman all made the all-district team.
