Suggestions for Recycling Hub issues I recently read an article in The Courier stating how the Recycling HUB, formerly known as the Litter Landing, has, "a history of abuse." This comment struck me as absurd. Although some agree, the majority doesn't, including me. I have been going to the Recycling HUB since before it changed, and I know for a fact that they had an amazing system. Litter Landing had people working there for only a few hours a day and their system worked because they had staff to sort and break down recyclable items that include boxes, bottles, and everyday trash. Another problem I noticed that you addressed is people leaving items in front of bins instead of inside them — a simple solution would be workers watching for these people. As stated, "Commissioner Tim Bechtol said he was confused as to why residents are unable to follow disposal guidelines." This is because there is no one to monitor the area to find those who don't follow the guidelines. Another thing I found is that the amount Rumpke is paid is $500,000 a year, and this amount grows every three years. What I suggest is using money from the Rumpke funds to pay for staff that will do the sorting, breaking down, and throwing away of hazardous things that can't go through the recycling process. This way we can use the money we are spending sufficiently and effectively. If they are unwilling to put any suggestions, put up cameras and track down those who don't follow the rules, making sure to capture their license plate numbers. Hazel Herrera Findlay Is recycling in Hancock County a charade? I was delivering plastic, glass, and cans to 1720 E. Sandusky St. yesterday. A Rumpke Waste and Recycling Truck emptied a "recycling" container, compacted the contents, and drove off. I've often questioned the efficiency of dumping everything together to be sorted elsewhere. Now, I have more questions. Who would want to sort through Hancock County's recyclables after the plastic, glass, aluminum, steel, and cardboard have been compacted in a truck that also collected garbage? Even if the sorting could be done mechanically, isn't this adding cost to the process? James Funk Findlay
