A journey of opportunities

Now that I'm a "golden girl," I feel like I can start my story with: "Picture this." It was 1990. A young, married new mother from Lima applies for a job with the Hancock County ADAMHS Board in Findlay, Ohio. She's been a hospital social worker and a child welfare worker but never worked primarily in mental health. Phyllis Putnam, the then-executive director of the board, takes a chance on her, and her journey begins. From her first day, Hancock County welcomed her, and by 1997, now a mother of three, she becomes the director. Fast forward and 36 years have passed. What a journey it has been! It has been filled with opportunities to meet individuals from all walks of life and all corners of our nation and to work alongside all sectors of the community. I've witnessed science expand treatment and medication interventions with greater odds of success. I've learned about the intersection of trauma, biology and social determinants of health. I've promoted prevention and early intervention. I have worked alongside a talented team of individuals and been guided by volunteer board members with keen insight and a dedication to our mission. The services funded by the Board are being delivered by staff at local agencies who have a passion for the work and a commitment to delivering the most current that science has to offer. Like any other disease, the person who knows most about it is the one living it and those who are close to them. They are the true heroes of my journey. They must put in the work and take the necessary steps. Change is hard work. Treatment works and people recover. A person in recovery is driven to help others. They don't forget the struggle. They use it to provide strength for the person next to them. I have seen generosity that knows no bounds, acts of kindness that I couldn't imagine, and strength and resilience beyond measure. My journey has been filled with grace and support during trials, successes and failures. Through it all I have been fueled by those we are here to serve. I have received much more than I have given, and I owe that gratitude to the entire community. I hope the person who follows me finds as much joy and fulfillment in the journey as I do. I will carry appreciation with me always. Precia Stuby has served the Hancock County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board for 36 years, 29 as executive director.
