Fan of Acton for governor I had the opportunity to be at the full-capacity Dr. Amy Acton Fireside Chat at the lovely Brugeman's Lodge Sunday. When I first heard she was running for governor I was not a fan. I didn't think she was electable. As a nurse, I wholly respected her scientific leadership as she helped Gov. DeWine lead us through those uncertain pandemic times as Ohio's Director of Public Health. Of course, their tough decisions made her many enemies as well. Then I got to hear Dr. Acton speak in Bowling Green last fall, and my reservations evaporated. I wanted everyone to hear her story, too, as I came to believe she is the right person to lead our state. At the event, we heard captivating Ohio State student Mackay Tuttle, the M.C. for the event. She introduced Jim Stanton, state auditor for the UAW, who emphasized his role in defending workers' rights and benefits and how Dr. Acton holds the same values of putting people before politics. Next, we were introduced to Dr. Acton. We heard about her childhood, which was a nightmare of neglect and homelessness. She shared that public schools helped save her life. She persevered past her adversities, working her way through college and then putting herself through The Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy. Having experienced such hardships, Dr. Amy understands the struggles of Ohioans going through this tough economy. She says she will fight against the special interests and corruption that has taken over our statehouse. She understands the value of supporting a strong public school system. She recently was endorsed by the teachers' union Ohio Education Association, for her strong support of public schools. Many other unions have endorsed her as well. Lastly, Dr. Acton took questions from the audience. A favorite I heard read something like, "If elected, what steps will you take to build trust and include moderate Republicans to ensure they feel represented?" She answered swiftly that she aims to reduce the vitriol across government. Her warm strength appealed to me. She has my vote! Cathy Weygandt Findlay
