Wind gusts damage structures, power lines

UPPER SANDUSKY — A fast-moving weather system brought snow to some parts of the U.S. and straight-line wind damage and heavy rain to others early Wednesday. Salix Iverson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Cleveland, said forecasters had been tracking the threat of severe weather throughout the day. "Over the last day or so, we've had this warm front wavering across the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes Region," Iverson said. The parent low-pressure system pushed northeast and brought a cold front with it. Southerly flow, Iverson noted, added moisture and instability, creating the "ingredients" for severe weather. When looking at possible weather, Iverson said the NWS relies on multiple forecasting tools available and even works closely with other national weather centers like NOAA to anticipate hazardous weather and issue timely warnings. Local impact In Wyandot County, first responders spend much of Wednesday addressing reports of wind damage. Sheriff Todd Frey said the majority of destruction occurred on a straight line between Forest and Sycamore, a line that included the north side of Upper Sandusky. Across the area, locals saw trees toppled, downed powerlines and structural damage. No injuries were reported during the weather, though one vehicle was briefly trapped by a fallen power line before occupants could be safely retrieved. Route 30 Harley Davidson on Tarhe Trail sustained roof damage and large metal doors were blown inward. Owner Mandie Bayliff said she heard a loud crash early Wednesday and was relieved to find no one injured. One motorcycle, out of hundreds onsite, had minor damage. Bayliff said she was touched by the community response, noting that customers and fellow riders stopped by to check in. Elsewhere in Upper Sandusky, a fallen tree near the Wyandot County Fairgrounds blocked North Sandusky Street and ruptured a gas line. Power outages forced several businesses, including The Andersons and Kasai, to close early. Frey urged residents to remain alert during rapidly changing weather conditions. Iverson agreed. "It's kind of our first big severe event of the 2026 season," Iverson said. "It won't be the last. Make sure you're prepared and have multiple ways to receive warnings."
